Midrange Calculator
Find the midrange and range of a data set.
Result
How it is calculated
You supply only the largest and smallest values of the data set. midrange = (max + min) ÷ 2 is the point exactly halfway between them, and range = max − min is the spread. Results are shown to four decimals. If the maximum is smaller than the minimum there is no result. Because only two values are used, the midrange is very sensitive to outliers and says nothing about where the bulk of the data lies.
Worked example
Test scores run from 48 to 92. Midrange = (92 + 48) ÷ 2 = 140 ÷ 2 = 70.0000. Range = 92 − 48 = 44.0000. The scores span 44 points, centred on 70.
Common mistakes
- Treating the midrange as the mean or median; it ignores every value except the two extremes.
- Typing the minimum into the maximum box, which blocks the result when max is below min.
- Using it on data with an outlier, where one extreme value drags the midrange far from the typical value.
- Confusing the range (a width, 44) with the midrange (a position, 70).
- Entering a sample size or a total rather than the actual highest and lowest observations.
About this calculator
The midrange, (maximum + minimum) / 2, is the simplest possible measure of a data set's center — the value exactly halfway between its extremes — while the range, maximum minus minimum, measures how spread out the data is. Unlike the mean or median, the midrange ignores every value except the two most extreme ones, which makes it fast to compute but highly sensitive to outliers.
Quality control inspectors and manufacturing engineers use the midrange for quick spot-checks on production runs when only extreme readings are logged, and meteorologists commonly report a daily temperature midrange from the recorded high and low. Statistics students encounter it as an introductory example of a measure of central tendency, useful for illustrating why more robust statistics like the median are usually preferred for skewed or outlier-heavy data.

The midrange looks at the two extreme values only, so a single outlier drags it away from where most of the data sits. A quick check is to compare it with the median or mean of the same set: if they differ a lot, the data are skewed or contain an extreme point. Input is rejected when the maximum is lower than the minimum. Which data set are you summarising, and does it contain any suspicious extreme values?
