Infant Formula Intake Calculator
Work out daily and per-feed formula amounts for your baby's weight.
Result
How it is calculated
The tool uses a single fixed rate of 150 mL of formula per kilogram per day, which is the lower end of the 150 to 200 mL range quoted for infants. daily (mL) = weight (kg) × 150 and per feed (mL) = daily ÷ feeds. Weight is the baby's weight in kilograms and must be between 0.3 and 25 kg; outside that range there is no result. Feeds is the number of bottles per day and is optional: leave it empty and the per-feed result shows a dash. If you do enter it, it must be a whole number from 1 to 24, otherwise no result appears. Results are rounded to whole millilitres. The tool does not use the upper end of the range, and it does not adjust for age, solids, breast milk or growth spurts. It is a starting estimate to discuss with a paediatrician.
Worked example
A baby weighs 5 kg and is fed 7 times a day. Daily total: 5 × 150 = 750 mL. Per feed: 750 ÷ 7 = 107.1, shown as 107 mL. So a bottle of about 105 to 110 mL every few hours would match the estimate. If the same baby is on 6 feeds, each one comes to 125 mL. At the upper 200 mL per kg end of the usual range the daily figure would be 1,000 mL, so 750 mL is the cautious end.
Common mistakes
- Entering the baby's weight in grams or pounds. The field is kilograms, so 5,000 g is 5, and 11 lb is about 5. Typing 5000 or 11 for a newborn shows no result or a far too large amount.
- Entering the number of ounces or millilitres per bottle in the feeds field. It wants how many feeds per day, such as 6 or 8, and rejects fractions like 7.5.
- Treating 150 mL/kg as a limit or a target to force. It is a rule of thumb; a hungry baby can need more and a sleepy one less, so follow the baby's cues and your paediatrician.
- Leaving the feeds field empty and expecting a per-feed amount. The tool then shows a dash.
- Using it for a baby who also takes breast milk or solids. The daily figure assumes formula alone, so it overstates the formula needed when other food is given.

About this calculator
Pediatric guidelines estimate a healthy infant's daily formula needs at roughly 150 mL per kilogram of body weight (about 2.3 oz per pound), a rule of thumb used from the newborn period through the first several months before solids are introduced. That daily total is then typically split across 6-8 feeds a day for younger infants, tapering to fewer, larger feeds as the baby grows and their stomach capacity increases.
Pediatricians, lactation consultants and new parents use this math to sanity-check whether a baby is getting enough — persistently underfeeding can slow weight gain, while consistently overshooting the range can lead to excessive weight gain or discomfort — though it's always a starting estimate to discuss with a pediatrician rather than a rigid rule, since appetite, growth spurts and individual metabolism vary.
