Half Marathon Pace Calculator
Enter your goal finish time to find your required half-marathon pace.
Result
How it is calculated
The tool divides your goal time by the race distance. The time is entered as a single number of total minutes (one hour 45 minutes is 105). The distance is fixed at 21.0975 km for the kilometre pace and 13.1094 miles for the mile pace: pace/km = minutes ÷ 21.0975, pace/mi = minutes ÷ 13.1094. Each pace is rounded to the nearest whole second and shown as minutes:seconds. Average speed is 21.0975 ÷ (minutes ÷ 60) in km/h, with two decimals. Zero or negative times give no result. The result is an even pace for the whole race, so course hills, wind and pacing strategy such as a slower start are not taken into account.
Worked example
Your goal is to finish in 1 hour 45 minutes, which you enter as 105 minutes. Pace per km: 105 ÷ 21.0975 = 4.9769 min, i.e. 298.6 seconds, rounded to 299 s, so 4:59 /km. Pace per mile: 105 ÷ 13.1094 = 8.0095 min, i.e. 480.6 s, rounded to 481 s, which is 8:01 /mi. Average speed: 21.0975 ÷ 1.75 = 12.06 km/h. In a race you would pass the 10 km marker at about 49:46.
Common mistakes
- Typing the goal time as hours and minutes (1.45 or 1:45) instead of total minutes. A value of 1.45 is read as 1.45 minutes and gives an impossible 0:04 /km pace.
- Entering seconds as a decimal of a minute incorrectly. A time of 1:52:30 is 112.5 minutes, not 112.30.
- Using the 21.1 km or 13.1 mile rounded figures to check the result by hand. The tool uses 21.0975 km, so a hand calculation with 21 km gives 5:00 /km here instead of 4:59 /km, and the gap grows for slower goal times.
- Treating the result as a guarantee of the finish time. An even pace is the plan, but real splits with hills or a slow first kilometre usually differ, so leave a few seconds of margin per km.
About this calculator
A half marathon covers 21.0975 kilometers (13.1 miles), and your required pace is simply your goal finish time divided by that distance — expressed as minutes per kilometer and minutes per mile so you can pace yourself against course markers in either unit. A 2-hour goal, for example, works out to about 5:41 min/km (9:09 min/mile).
Runners and coaches use this figure to build training plans, set splits for each 5K segment of the race, and program GPS watches like Garmin or Strava with target pace alerts. Knowing the exact pace ahead of time helps avoid the classic mistake of starting too fast and fading in the final kilometers.

The time goes in as a single number of minutes, so an hour, forty-five minutes and thirty seconds is 105.5. The default 105 minutes gives 4:59 per km, 8:01 per mile and 12.06 km/h. That is an even-pace average for the whole distance. Use it as a target to check against split times on a watch, then adjust for your course. What finishing time are you aiming for, and is the route flat?
