Daily Fiber Intake Calculator
Find your daily fiber target.
Result
How it is calculated
The tool applies a common dietary guideline of about 14 grams of fibre for every 1,000 calories eaten: fibre (g) = calories / 1000 × 14. Enter your daily calorie intake in kcal and the result is rounded to the nearest whole gram. Because the target scales with energy intake, a person who eats more needs more fibre than one who eats less. This is a general target for healthy adults; it does not adjust for age, sex, pregnancy or medical conditions, and some people with digestive disorders are advised to eat more or less fibre. Fibre should be increased gradually with plenty of water.
Worked example
Someone who eats 2,000 kcal a day: 2,000 / 1,000 = 2 units of 1,000 calories. Multiply by 14 g: 2 × 14 = 28 g of fibre per day. At 2,500 kcal the target would be 2.5 × 14 = 35 g.
Common mistakes
- Entering kilojoules instead of kilocalories (kcal), which inflates the result by about 4 times.
- Entering the calories of one meal instead of the whole day.
- Entering calories you want to eat while dieting but eating the same food volume; the target scales with intake, so a low-calorie diet gives a lower figure.
- Counting the food's total weight in grams rather than only the fibre it contains.
- Raising fibre sharply overnight, which commonly causes bloating; build up gradually.

About this calculator
This calculator estimates a recommended daily fiber target from your calorie intake, based on the common dietary guideline of roughly 14 grams of fiber per 1,000 calories consumed — the reasoning bodies like the USDA use instead of a single flat number for everyone.
People adjusting their diet for better digestion, cholesterol management, or blood sugar control use it to get a personalized gram target rather than relying on the generic "25g for women, 38g for men" figure that doesn't account for how much they actually eat.

The tool scales fibre to energy intake only, at 14 g per 1,000 kcal, and rounds to whole grams. It knows nothing about age, sex or medical conditions, so official daily recommendations for your group may differ a little. If your usual intake is far below the result, most people raise fibre gradually and drink enough water rather than jump in a day. Would age and sex based targets be useful to you?
