Exponent Calculator
Calculate a base raised to the power of an exponent.
Result
How it is calculated
The tool raises a base to an exponent: result = baseexponent. A positive whole exponent means repeated multiplication (23 = 2 × 2 × 2), a zero exponent gives 1, and a negative exponent gives the reciprocal (2−2 = 1 ÷ 22 = 0.25). Fractional exponents are roots: an exponent of 0.5 is the square root. Both fields accept decimals. If the answer is not a real finite number, for example a negative base with a fractional exponent or a result too large to represent, the tool shows no result. The output is rounded to two decimals, so very small results such as 2−10 display as 0.00.
Worked example
Calculate 2 to the power 10. The base is multiplied by itself ten times: 2, 4, 8, 16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512, 1,024. The tool shows 1,024.00. That is the number of different values 10 binary digits can hold, which is why 1,024 shows up in computing.
Common mistakes
- Multiplying instead of exponentiating. 210 is 1,024, not 2 × 10 = 20.
- Putting the numbers in the wrong fields. 102 is 100, while 210 is 1,024.
- Expecting a result for a negative base with a fractional exponent, such as (−8)0.5. It is not a real number, so the tool gives none.
- Reading a negative exponent as a negative answer. 2−3 is 0.125, positive; the minus sign makes it a reciprocal.
- Trusting 0.00 for tiny results. Two-decimal rounding hides small values; use a tool with more precision if you need them.
About this calculator
This calculator raises a base number to any exponent — including negative, fractional or decimal exponents, not just whole-number powers — handling cases a basic calculator or mental math struggles with, like a negative exponent (which produces a reciprocal) or a fractional one (which produces a root).
It is used by students checking algebra and exponent-rule homework, and by anyone working through science or finance problems involving exponential growth, scientific notation, or compound formulas where a number needs to be raised to a power beyond simple squaring or cubing.

For growth problems, a rate of 5% over 10 periods is 1.05 raised to 10, which gives 1.63, so multiply your starting amount by that. To take a root, type the fraction as a decimal: 27 to the 0.333333 shows 3.00, but it is a close approximation, not exact. Odd roots of negative bases, such as the cube root of minus 8, return no result here. What are you raising to a power?
