Discounted Payback Period Calculator
Enter your initial investment, expected annual cash flow, and discount rate to find the discounted payback period.

How it is calculated
Each year's cash flow is discounted to today and added to a running total until the total reaches the investment.
PVt = CF ÷ (1 + r)t
payback = (t − 1) + (I − cumulativet−1) ÷ PVt
CF is the equal annual cash flow in dollars, r the discount rate as a decimal (8% = 0.08), I the initial investment and t the first year in which the running total reaches I. The fraction of that last year is found by straight-line interpolation. The simple payback is just I ÷ CF. The tool checks up to 100 years and shows nothing if the investment is not recovered by then. A rate of 0 is allowed and makes both paybacks equal; negative rates are rejected. The last result adds the whole of year t, so it is the total at the end of that year, not at the fractional payback moment.
Worked example
Invest $50,000, receive $12,000 a year, discount at 8%. Discounted flows are 11,111.11, 10,288.07, 9,525.99, 8,820.36 and 8,167.00, which add up to 47,912.52 after year 5, still short of 50,000. Year 6 adds 7,562.04, so the target is crossed during that year: 5 + (50,000 − 47,912.52) ÷ 7,562.04 gives 5.28 years. The simple payback is 50,000 ÷ 12,000 = 4.17 years. Total discounted value at the end of year 6 is $55,474.56.
Common mistakes
- Entering the discount rate as a decimal. The field takes percent: 8 means 8%, while 0.08 would discount at 0.08% and give a result close to the simple payback.
- Putting the total of all expected cash in the annual field. It must be the amount received in one year; the tool repeats it every year.
- Comparing the discounted payback with the simple one and expecting equality. With any positive rate it is longer; only a 0% rate makes them match.
- Expecting a number when the cash flow is too small. If the discounted flows never add up to the investment within 100 years (for example $3,000 a year on $50,000 at 8%), no result is shown.
- Reading the final dollar figure as the cash at the exact payback moment. It is the discounted total at the end of the whole year in which payback happens.
About this calculator
The discounted payback period is a capital-budgeting metric that measures how long it takes an investment to recoup its initial cost using discounted (present-value) cash flows rather than raw nominal ones. Each period's cash flow is divided by (1 + discount rate)^n before being accumulated, so the calculation accounts for the time value of money — a dollar received in year five is worth less today than a dollar received in year one.
Corporate finance teams and investment analysts use it as a refinement of the simple (undiscounted) payback period, which is criticized for ignoring the cost of capital entirely; the discounted version gives a more conservative, and usually longer, recovery timeline, and a project whose discounted payback period exceeds its useful life will never actually recoup its cost in present-value terms. It's commonly used alongside NPV (Net Present Value) and IRR (Internal Rate of Return) as a quick risk/liquidity screen before deeper valuation work.
Discount each year's cash flow at your rate and add them up until they cover the initial investment: that is the discounted payback, shown next to the simple payback and the running discounted total, so you see how much the discount rate pushes break-even back.
