How it is calculated
The tool takes WGS84 latitude and longitude in decimal degrees (north and east positive, south and west negative) and projects them with the standard transverse Mercator series: scale factor k0 = 0.9996, semi-major axis a = 6,378,137 m, flattening 1/298.257223563. The zone is floor((lon + 180) / 6) + 1, and the central meridian of that zone is (zone − 1) × 6 − 180 + 3 degrees.
Easting is measured from the central meridian with a false easting of 500,000 m. Northing is the distance from the equator, with 10,000,000 m added in the southern hemisphere. The built-in exceptions are applied: the widened zone 32 over southwest Norway and zones 31, 33, 35 and 37 over Svalbard. The result is a zone number plus a latitude band letter (C to X), such as 35T. Latitude must be between -80 and 84 and longitude between -180 and 180; otherwise there is no result. Easting and northing are in metres.
Worked example
Convert central Istanbul, latitude 41.0082 and longitude 28.9784. The zone is floor((28.9784 + 180) / 6) + 1 = 35, whose central meridian is 27°E. Latitude 41° falls in band T, so the zone reads 35T. The point lies 1.9784° east of the central meridian, which the projection turns into an easting of 666,370.51 mE, that is 166,370.51 m east of the 500,000 m false origin. The distance from the equator, scaled by 0.9996, gives a northing of 4,541,552.49 mN.
Common mistakes
- Entering degrees, minutes and seconds such as 41°00'30" instead of decimal degrees: the fields expect 41.0082, so convert first.
- Forgetting the sign of west longitudes and southern latitudes: New York is about -74 longitude, and omitting the minus sign puts the point in the wrong zone and hemisphere.
- Swapping latitude and longitude: values like 28.97 and 41.00 are both valid in either field, so the tool gives a result for a wrong location without warning.
- Reading the letter in
35Tas a hemisphere: it is a latitude band, and bands C to M are southern while N to X are northern. Southern points show a northing already offset by 10,000,000 m. - Using the output for polar areas: latitudes beyond 84°N or 80°S return no result, since UTM does not cover them. Points exactly on a zone edge can also have an easting far from 500,000 m, so check the zone before using the number on a map.
About this calculator
The Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) system divides the Earth into 60 north-south zones, each 6° of longitude wide, and projects each zone onto a flat transverse Mercator grid so that positions can be given as simple metric easting and northing coordinates instead of angular latitude and longitude. Converting from WGS84 decimal degrees involves picking the correct zone from the longitude, then applying the transverse Mercator projection formulas (with a false easting of 500,000 m and, in the southern hemisphere, a false northing of 10,000,000 m) referenced to the WGS84 ellipsoid.
Because UTM coordinates are in meters on a locally near-flat grid, they're far more convenient than degrees for measuring distances, plotting on paper maps, or overlaying on a projected GIS layer. Surveyors, GIS analysts, and military and emergency-response personnel use this converter to turn GPS-derived latitude/longitude readings into the zone, easting, and northing values used on topographic maps and in coordinate-based fieldwork.

The defaults make a handy test: 40.7128, -74.0060 should return 18T with 583,959.37 mE and 4,507,351.00 mN. The tool assumes the WGS84 datum, which GPS uses, so an older paper map printed on another datum such as NAD27 or ED50 can disagree with it by tens of metres or more. Match the zone shown on your map before reading off a grid reference. Which map series or datum are you plotting onto?
