Daily Salt Limit Calculator
Turn your sodium target into grams and teaspoons of salt per day.

How it is calculated
Table salt is sodium chloride, and only part of its weight is sodium, so a sodium target in milligrams has to be scaled up to get the salt it corresponds to. The tool uses salt (g) = sodium (mg) × 2.5 ÷ 1000. The factor 2.5 is the rounded inverse of salt's sodium share of about 39 %, and dividing by 1000 turns milligrams into grams. Teaspoons are then salt (g) ÷ 5.69, because the engine counts one level teaspoon of salt as 5.69 g. Both results are rounded to two decimals. The input is sodium in mg per day, not salt; zero is accepted, and an empty or negative value gives no result. The tool does not choose a target for you, so the figure comes from whichever guideline you type in.
Worked example
A daily sodium target of 2,000 mg is entered. Convert to grams of salt: 2,000 × 2.5 ÷ 1000 = 5.0, shown as 5.00 g. Convert to teaspoons: 5.00 ÷ 5.69 = 0.88 teaspoon. So 2,000 mg of sodium is about the amount in 5 g of salt, a little under one level teaspoon. For a tighter target of 1,500 mg the same steps give 3.75 g of salt and 0.66 teaspoon.
Common mistakes
- Entering the salt weight instead of the sodium weight. If a label says 5 g of salt, the sodium is about 2,000 mg, so typing 5000 here would overstate it by 2.5 times.
- Typing grams where milligrams are needed. 2 g of sodium must be entered as 2000, not 2.
- Forgetting that the tool counts only the salt you add and the label shows in total. Bread, cheese and sauces already carry sodium, so the figure is the whole day's budget, not the amount to shake over food.
- Treating the teaspoon figure as precise. It assumes 5.69 g per level teaspoon; coarse sea salt and fine table salt pack differently, so measure on a scale if accuracy matters.
- Reading a sodium value on a nutrition label as a salt value. Many labels give sodium, and some give salt, so check which one it is first.

About this calculator
Sodium and salt (sodium chloride) aren't the same thing — salt is only about 39% sodium by weight, so converting a sodium guideline into a salt amount means dividing by 0.39 (or multiplying by roughly 2.5). The World Health Organization recommends under 2,000 mg of sodium per day (about 5 g of salt, roughly one teaspoon), while the American Heart Association's ideal limit is even tighter at 1,500 mg for most adults, especially those with high blood pressure.
Dietitians, cardiac and kidney patients, and anyone reading a nutrition label use this conversion constantly, since food labels in the US list sodium in milligrams while home cooks think in teaspoons or grams of salt added to a dish. The gap between the two numbers matters — someone told to “cut back on sodium” who instead cuts back on salt by the same numeric amount is actually cutting their intake by less than half of what's needed.
Sodium targets are given in milligrams, but you cook with salt; enter your target and it is converted into grams of salt and teaspoons.
