Corrected Reticulocyte Count Calculator
Correct your reticulocyte count for hematocrit.
Result
How it is calculated
The tool multiplies the reported reticulocyte percentage by how far the hematocrit is from a fixed reference: corrected = retic% × (Hct ÷ 45). Both inputs are percentages, and 45 is the normal hematocrit built into the formula; it cannot be changed, so a different reference value (for example one used for women or children) is not applied. The answer is shown as a percentage with two decimals. A reticulocyte percentage of zero is accepted and gives 0.00%. The tool gives no result for a negative reticulocyte percentage, for a reticulocyte percentage or hematocrit above 100, or for a hematocrit of zero or below. The formula only rescales for anemia; it does not include the maturation-time correction that some laboratories add.
Worked example
A patient has a reticulocyte count of 4% and a hematocrit of 27%. First work out the hematocrit ratio: 27 ÷ 45 = 0.6. Then multiply the raw count by it: 4 × 0.6 = 2.4. The calculator displays 2.40%. The raw 4% looked high only because there are fewer red cells in total; after correction the figure is 2.40%.
Common mistakes
- Entering hematocrit as a fraction (0.27) instead of a percentage (27). The tool still calculates, but the corrected value comes out about 100 times too small (0.02% instead of 2.40%).
- Using hemoglobin in g/dL in the hematocrit field. The formula needs hematocrit in percent.
- Entering the absolute reticulocyte count (cells per microliter) in the percentage field. Anything above 100 gives no result, and a smaller number would be misread as a percentage.
- Expecting a different normal hematocrit to be used. The tool always divides by 45, so values for women or children are not adjusted.

About this calculator
The Corrected Reticulocyte Count (CRC) adjusts the raw reticulocyte percentage reported on a blood smear for the degree of anemia present, using the formula CRC = retic% × (patient hematocrit ÷ 45), where 45% is taken as a normal hematocrit. Because reticulocytes (immature red blood cells) are counted as a percentage of total red cells, a patient with a low hematocrit will show a falsely elevated reticulocyte percentage even if the bone marrow is not actually producing more cells — correcting for hematocrit removes this bias.
Hematologists and internists use the CRC to judge whether the bone marrow is mounting an appropriate response to anemia. A high corrected count points to a regenerative process such as hemolysis or acute blood loss, where the marrow is compensating by releasing young red cells early; a low corrected count in the setting of anemia suggests a hypoproliferative cause, such as iron deficiency, chronic disease, or marrow failure, where the marrow is not responding adequately.
Your reticulocyte percentage is scaled by your hematocrit against a normal value to give the corrected count, one of the first steps in working up anemia.
