Calories Burned Running Calculator
See how many calories you burn running, based on standard MET values.
Result
How it is calculated
The pace you pick maps to a fixed MET value: jog 7.0, moderate 9.8, fast 11.8, sprint 14.5. Calories are kcal = MET × 3.5 × W / 200 × T, with W the body weight in kilograms and T the running time in minutes. The 3.5 is the oxygen cost of one MET (ml per kg per minute) and dividing by 200 turns it into kilocalories per minute. The tool shows the total, the calories per minute and the MET used. Because the MET includes resting metabolism, the result is total energy for the run, not the extra above sitting. Weight and duration must be positive; an unrecognised pace is treated as moderate. Distance, incline and speed in km/h are not inputs, so you must judge which pace label matches your run.
Worked example
A 75 kg runner runs for 40 minutes at the fast pace, 11.8 METs. Per minute: 11.8 × 3.5 × 75 / 200 = 15.4875, shown as 15.5 kcal. For the whole run: 15.4875 × 40 = 619.5, which the tool rounds to 620. The result is 620 calories, at 15.5 per minute, using a MET of 11.8. Dropping to the jog level (7.0 METs) for the same 40 minutes would give about 368 calories.
Common mistakes
- Typing body weight in pounds. The formula needs kilograms; 165 lb entered as 165 more than doubles the answer.
- Entering the time in hours or as hh:mm. The field is minutes only: 1 hour 10 minutes is 70.
- Choosing "sprint" for a hard run. The sprint level (14.5 METs) is meant for very fast running; picking it for a whole 40-minute session overstates the burn a lot. Use fast or moderate unless you really hold that effort.
- Including warm-up walking and rest stops in the duration at running intensity. Count only the minutes you actually ran, or split the session.
- Reading the total as the calories that matter for weight change. It includes the roughly 1 MET you would burn at rest anyway.
About this calculator
This calculator estimates calorie burn from running using the MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) method: each running pace has a standard MET value assigned by exercise-science research (an easy 5 mph jog sits around 8.3 METs, while a fast 8 mph run climbs to roughly 11.8), and calories burned = METs × 3.5 × body weight in kilograms ÷ 200 × duration in minutes (about 1.05 × MET × kg per hour). Because the formula scales directly with both your weight and how long you’re out there, two people running the same pace for the same time will burn different amounts if their body weights differ.
This time-and-intensity approach is what fitness trackers and treadmill displays use under the hood, and it’s the version personal trainers reach for when programming a session around a target duration rather than a fixed distance — a 30-minute tempo run, a 45-minute long run — since it captures pace changes throughout a variable-effort workout more naturally than a pure distance-based estimate would.
