Bone Mass Estimate Calculator
Enter your height and weight to get an approximate bone mass estimate.
Result
How it is calculated
The estimate uses a power-law formula on body size: bone mass (kg) = 3.02 × (H² × W × 400)0.712 ÷ 1000, where H is height in metres (the tool converts your centimetres) and W is weight in kilograms. The factor 400 and the exponent 0.712 are fixed in the code, and the ÷ 1000 turns grams into kilograms. The second result is bone mass ÷ weight × 100. Only height and weight enter the formula, so sex, age, frame and muscularity are not considered. Heights outside 50–272 cm and weights outside 2–650 kg give no result, and so does an estimate that would reach body weight. The formula borrows the shape of von Döbeln's skeletal-mass equation but puts body weight where that equation uses wrist and femur breadths, so it is an unvalidated rough estimate, not a published method and not a bone density measurement.
Worked example
A person 175 cm tall weighing 70 kg. Height in metres is 1.75, squared 3.0625. Inner term: 3.0625 × 70 × 400 = 85,750. Raise to 0.712: about 3,254. Multiply by 3.02: about 9,828 g, which the tool shows as 9.83 kg. As a share of body weight: 9.83 ÷ 70 × 100 = 14.04%.
Common mistakes
- Typing height in metres (1.75) instead of centimetres. The tool treats it as an impossible height under 50 cm and shows no result, so convert to 175 first.
- Entering weight in pounds, which inflates the result; 154 lb typed as 154 kg gives 17.23 kg for a 175 cm person instead of about 9.8 kg.
- Reading the figure as a bone density or osteoporosis test: it estimates skeleton weight, not mineral content, and cannot tell a healthy skeleton from a fragile one.
- Expecting it to react to training or sex. Changing muscle or fat while height and weight stay equal changes nothing.
About this calculator
Bone mass estimation from height and weight gives a rough approximation of the total mass of the skeleton in kilograms, expressed both as an absolute value and as a percentage of total body weight — skeletal mass typically accounts for roughly 12-15% of total body weight in adults, though this varies with frame size, sex, and muscularity. The formula borrows the shape of von Döbeln's skeletal-mass equation but uses body weight where that equation uses wrist and femur breadths, so it is an unvalidated rough estimate, not a published method and not a direct measurement such as a DXA scan.
Fitness trackers, body-composition scales, and strength coaches reference bone mass estimates as one component of a fuller body-composition breakdown alongside fat mass and lean muscle mass, useful for tracking changes over time or understanding frame size when interpreting other measurements like BMI or ideal body weight.
From height and weight alone it gives a rough bone mass in kilograms and the share of your body weight that represents.
