Base58 Encoder / Decoder
Convert text to and from Base58.
Result
How it is calculated
In encode mode the text is read as its raw bytes (UTF-8 for non-ASCII characters), and the whole byte sequence is treated as one big base-256 number. That number is rewritten in base 58 with the Bitcoin alphabet 123456789ABCDEFGHJKLMNPQRSTUVWXYZabcdefghijkmnopqrstuvwxyz, which leaves out the look-alikes 0, O, I and l. Each leading zero byte becomes a leading 1, so a zero prefix keeps its length. Decode mode reverses this: every character is looked up in the alphabet, the number is rebuilt and the bytes are shown as text, with leading 1s turned back into zero bytes.
Base58 is an encoding, not encryption, and has no padding or + / = signs. The 4-byte checksum of Bitcoin addresses (Base58Check) is neither added nor checked here. Spaces count as characters, so a stray space makes decoding fail, as does any character outside the alphabet. Empty input gives no result.
Worked example
Encode the text Hello World. Its 11 bytes (72, 101, 108, 108, 111, 32, 87, 111, 114, 108, 100) together form one number, 87,521,618,088,882,533,792,115,812. Dividing it repeatedly by 58 gives the base-58 digits, and each digit is replaced by its alphabet character. The result is JxF12TrwUP45BMd, 15 characters. Switching to decode mode and pasting that string returns Hello World. No 0, O, I or l appears in the output.
Common mistakes
- Mixing up Base58 with Base64. The alphabets differ, so a Base64 string pasted in decode mode usually fails because of characters such as 0, O, I, l, + or /.
- Treating the output as secure. Base58 only changes how data is written, and anyone can reverse it.
- Expecting a Bitcoin address to be validated. A real address has a version byte and a 4-byte checksum (Base58Check); this tool only converts the bytes and checks neither. For example,
JxF12TrwUP45BMddecodes happily although it is not an address. - Pasting a Base58 string with a leading or trailing space. The space is not in the alphabet, so decoding gives no result.
- Dropping or adding leading 1 characters. Each leading 1 stands for one zero byte, so
11JxF12TrwUP45BMddecodes to two invisible zero characters followed by Hello World.
About this calculator
This tool encodes and decodes text using Base58, the alphabet made popular by Bitcoin, which uses 58 alphanumeric characters and deliberately excludes visually confusing ones — 0 (zero), O (capital o), I (capital i), and l (lowercase L) — so encoded strings are harder to misread or mistype.
Cryptocurrency developers and users encounter it in Bitcoin addresses and private key formats (WIF), and blockchain engineers use it when building or debugging wallet software that needs to encode raw bytes into a human-friendly string.

This tool treats your input as text, so it encodes the UTF-8 bytes of what you type: abc becomes ZiCa and the single letter é becomes Ftc. It does not read hexadecimal, so a hex string typed in is encoded as characters, not as the bytes it describes. In decode mode, anything that is not readable text, such as a binary payload, shows up as unreadable symbols. Are you working with wallet data, short IDs or something else, and in which direction?
