Morse Code Translator
How do I write Morse code?
Result
How it is calculated
In text to Morse mode the tool looks up each letter A to Z, digit 0 to 9 and punctuation mark (. , ? ' ! ( ) & : ; = + - " @) in the International Morse table (for example E = ., T = -, S = ..., 1 = .----). Letters in a word are separated by one space and words by / . Input is made uppercase first, any run of spaces counts as one word gap, and any character without a code, such as an accented letter, is skipped.
In Morse to text mode the input is split into words at /, with or without spaces around it, and into letters at spaces, and each code is matched against the same table. Unknown codes are dropped, and words are joined by a space. Use a dot, a dash and exact spacing, otherwise a letter will be missed.
Worked example
Decode ... --- ... / .---- .---- ..---. The slash splits it into two words. The first word has three codes: ... is S, --- is O and ... is S, giving SOS. The second has .---- (1), .---- (1) and ..--- (2), giving 112. The result is SOS 112.
Common mistakes
- Leaving out the spaces between letters.
...---...without spaces cannot be split, so nothing is decoded. - Separating words with only a space instead of
/, which merges the words into one. - Typing an em dash or a bullet instead of the plain hyphen
-and full stop., which the decoder does not recognise. - Expecting accented or non-English letters to be encoded; only A to Z, 0 to 9 and the standard (ITU) punctuation marks are supported.
About this calculator
This tool translates text into Morse code — the system of short and long signals (dots and dashes) originally devised for telegraph transmission — and decodes Morse code back into readable text, covering letters, numbers and common punctuation.
It is used by amateur radio operators and Scouts learning or practicing Morse for licensing exams and signaling exercises, by hobbyists decoding messages from old films, puzzles or flashing-light signals, and by anyone curious to see what their name or a phrase looks like in the code once used for maritime distress signals like SOS.

Words are separated by a slash when decoding, with or without spaces around it, so SOS/112 and SOS / 112 both split into two words; a code the tool cannot match is dropped, so a missing letter usually means a typo in its dots and dashes. Common punctuation such as the comma, full stop and question mark is encoded too. A quick check is to encode your text, paste the result back into decode mode and compare. Which messages are you practising with?
