Acute:Chronic Workload Ratio (ACWR) Calculator
Keep your training load in the safe zone.
Result
How it is calculated
The ratio divides the recent training load by the longer-term average load.
ACWR = acute load ÷ chronic load
The acute load is the load of the current week and the chronic load is the average weekly load over the past 4 weeks. Both are in the same arbitrary unit of your choice (session-RPE minutes, distance, tonnage), so the unit cancels out and the result has no unit. The acute load may be zero (the ratio is then 0.00), but it cannot be negative, and the chronic load must be above zero because dividing by zero is impossible. The result is shown to 2 decimals. The tool returns the number only; it does not classify it as safe or risky, so you compare it yourself with the ranges your coach uses.
Worked example
This week an athlete logged a load of 1800 units. The average of the last four weeks was 1500 units per week. Divide: 1800 ÷ 1500. The ACWR is 1.20. It means this week was 20 % heavier than the recent average. The same week against a 4-week average of 1200 would give 1.50, which is a much sharper jump.
Common mistakes
- Entering the sum of the last four weeks as the chronic load. It must be the weekly average, so divide the four-week total by 4 first.
- Mixing load units, such as acute in minutes and chronic in session-RPE points. Both must be measured the same way.
- Reading the ratio as a percentage. 1.20 means 120 % of the usual load, which is a 20 % increase, not a 120 % increase.
- Treating a low ratio as automatically good. 0.60 means a week far lighter than usual, which is a different kind of change in load.
- Using the ratio as a verdict. It compares loads only and ignores sleep, illness, age or injury history.

About this calculator
The Acute:Chronic Workload Ratio (ACWR) compares an athlete's recent training load, usually the past 7 days, the acute load, against their longer-term average load, typically a rolling 4-week chronic average, to flag sudden, potentially risky spikes in training. The concept was popularized by sports scientist Tim Gabbett's research on injury risk in elite team-sport athletes, which found that ratios in a sweet-spot range around 0.8 to 1.3 were associated with lower injury rates, while ratios above roughly 1.5, a sharp spike relative to recent baseline, correlated with substantially higher injury risk.
Strength and conditioning coaches and sports medicine staff track ACWR week to week to decide whether to hold back or progress an athlete's training volume, using it alongside, not instead of, subjective wellness monitoring, since the ratio itself has been debated in the sports-science literature for methodological limitations like the mathematical coupling between the acute and chronic terms.
Only the ratio itself is returned and it is not classified, so compare it with the commonly cited risk zones above.
