Wrist Frame Size Calculator
Find your body frame size from a simple wrist measurement.
Result
How it is calculated
The tool divides height by wrist circumference, both in centimetres: r = height ÷ wrist. A thin wrist gives a high ratio. For the male setting, r > 10.4 is Small, 9.6 ≤ r ≤ 10.4 is Medium and r < 9.6 is Large. For the female setting the cut-offs are 11 and 10.1: above 11 is Small, 10.1 to 11 is Medium, below 10.1 is Large. If sex is not chosen the male cut-offs are used, and any value other than male uses the female ones. The ratio shown is rounded to two decimals, but the class is decided on the unrounded number. Height must be between 50 and 272 cm and the wrist between 5 and 40 cm; values outside these ranges, such as a height typed in metres or a wrist in millimetres, show no result. The tool gives a frame class only, not a weight range.
Worked example
A man is 175 cm tall and his wrist circumference is 17 cm. Step 1: 175 ÷ 17 = 10.29. Step 2: for the male setting, Small needs a ratio above 10.4 and Large needs one below 9.6, and 10.29 falls between them. The frame class is Medium, with a height/wrist ratio of 10.29. A wrist of 16.8 cm at the same height would give 10.42 and tip him into Small, so the measurement matters at the edges.
Common mistakes
- Entering the wrist in inches, or the height in feet and inches. Both fields are in centimetres, and a wrist under 5 cm or a height under 50 cm gives no result.
- Measuring the wrist at the wrong place. Wrap the tape just below the wrist bone, round the narrowest part, on the same wrist each time.
- Forgetting to choose sex. The male cut-offs are used by default, and the same person can be Small on the male scale and Medium on the female scale (a ratio of 10.8, for example).
- Reading a ratio of 10.4 as automatically Small. Exactly 10.4 is Medium for men; only values above it are Small.
- Taking the class as a verdict on weight. A body frame label says nothing about body fat, and the wrist is only a rough proxy for bone size.

About this calculator
Body frame size — small, medium, or large — is traditionally estimated from the ratio between a person's height and their wrist circumference, an approach popularized by Metropolitan Life Insurance's height-weight tables in the 20th century. A person with a relatively thin wrist for their height is classified as small-framed, while a proportionally thicker wrist indicates a large frame.
Frame size matters because “ideal weight” tables and ranges were originally built around it — the same height can have a healthy weight range that shifts up or down depending on whether someone has a small or large bone structure.
