Wrist Circumference Frame Size Calculator
Small, medium or large frame? Your wrist and height give the answer.

How it is calculated
The tool divides standing height by wrist circumference, both in centimetres: ratio = height ÷ wrist. A higher ratio means a slimmer wrist for your height. For men, a ratio above 10.4 is a small frame, 9.6 to 10.4 is medium, and below 9.6 is large. For women the cut-offs are above 11.0 for small, 10.1 to 11.0 for medium, and below 10.1 for large. The result also converts your wrist to inches (cm ÷ 2.54). The sex field only selects the cut-offs; it does not adjust the ratio, and a value other than male or female shows no result. Height must be 50 to 272 cm and wrist 5 to 40 cm, so a height in metres or a wrist in millimetres is rejected. Measure the wrist just above the bony bump with a flexible tape.
Worked example
A woman is 165 cm tall with a 15.5 cm wrist. Ratio = 165 ÷ 15.5 = 10.65. For women, medium frame covers ratios from 10.1 to 11.0, so the result is a medium frame. Her wrist in inches is 15.5 ÷ 2.54 = 6.10 in. The same ratio of 10.65 would give a man a small frame, because it is above the male small cut-off of 10.4.
Common mistakes
- Entering the wrist in inches (6.1) or millimetres (155). Millimetres are rejected, but an inch value of 5 or more is accepted as centimetres and gives a nonsense ratio of about 27, so always type centimetres.
- Entering height in metres (1.65) rather than centimetres (165); the tool shows no result for it.
- Choosing the wrong sex, which changes the cut-offs: the same 10.65 ratio is medium for a woman and small for a man. If the sex is left unset the male cut-offs are used.
- Measuring over the wrist bone or with a loose tape, or measuring a wrist that is swollen or under a watch strap, which can shift the ratio across a boundary.
- Treating the frame result as a body-fat verdict; it reflects skeletal build only and says nothing about weight or fat.

About this calculator
Body frame size — small, medium or large — reflects skeletal structure rather than fat or muscle, and it's most commonly estimated from the ratio of height to wrist circumference: for adults, a height-to-wrist ratio above roughly 10.4 (men) or 11.0 (women) indicates a small frame, a middle range indicates medium, and a ratio below that indicates a large frame (exact cutoffs vary slightly by source).
Dietitians and clinicians reference frame size when interpreting "ideal weight" tables and body-composition norms, since standard weight charts typically assume a medium frame — a large-framed person can carry more lean mass at a healthy weight than the same chart implies, and a small-framed person may look overweight on the same chart while actually carrying excess fat rather than bone and muscle. It's a simple corrective step that stops a single generic weight range from being applied to very differently built people.
