How it is calculated
This is a counting estimate, not a word solver. The pattern must be exactly 5 characters. Each underscore is an unknown position and every other character counts as a known letter. From the excluded field the tool keeps only the distinct letters A to Z, ignoring case, punctuation, spaces, repeats and non-English letters. Then letters per slot = 26 − excluded letters (never below 0) and estimate = unknown positions × letters per slot. It reports a sentence with the estimate, the number of unknown positions and the number of excluded letters, in your language. If no position is unknown it says the pattern is fully known. The tool does not remove the known green letters from the other slots, does not use yellow letters, and never checks a word list, so the figure is a rough size of the search space.
Worked example
Your pattern is _R_N_ and your gray letters are S, T, A, L, E, D, O, I and U. The pattern has 3 underscores, so there are 3 unknown positions. The excluded field holds 9 distinct letters, so each open slot has 26 − 9 = 17 possible letters. The estimate is 3 × 17 = 51 candidate letter-slots. That is a count of letter choices per slot added together, not the number of possible words. With no exclusions the same pattern would show 3 × 26 = 78.
Common mistakes
- Typing a pattern that is not exactly 5 characters. A 4- or 6-character entry returns no result.
- Using a question mark, a dash or a space for a blank. Only an underscore is an unknown, so a pattern like ?R?N? is treated as fully known with 0 unknown positions.
- Reading the estimate as the number of possible words. It counts letters per slot added together, and most letter combinations are not real words.
- Putting yellow letters in the excluded field. Yellow letters are in the word, and excluding them would wrongly shrink the count.
- Expecting the known green letters to be removed from the other slots. The tool only subtracts the excluded letters, so R and N still count among the 17 letters per open slot in the example.
About this calculator
This calculator estimates how many candidate letters remain possible for each unsolved position in a Wordle-style puzzle, based on what you’ve already learned: green (correct-position) letters lock that slot to a single known letter, while letters you’ve excluded (grayed out as not-in-the-word) are removed from consideration in every remaining unknown slot. The result is a rough count of the letter possibility space still open at each position, and a combined estimate across all unknown slots together.
It’s a simple counting exercise in combinatorics, not a word-list solver — it doesn’t check which combinations spell real English words — but it’s a quick way for players to see how much a guess has actually narrowed things down before committing to solvers or full word lists. An underscore marks each unknown position in the pattern, and the excluded letters narrow down the remaining candidates.

The tool counts open slots only. Pattern _R_N_ reports 3 unknown positions, while a solved row such as CRANE reports 0. Greens in the pattern do not shrink the other slots and yellow letters are not tracked, so read the figure as a rough progress gauge, never as a list of words. Put only gray letters in the excluded box. Which opening word do you play, and how many letters does it usually rule out?
