Whois Field Reference
Type a WHOIS field name to see its category and what it means.
Result
How it is calculated
The tool has a built-in list of 15 common WHOIS fields: domain name, registrar, registrar IANA ID, WHOIS server, updated date, creation date, registry expiry date, registrant, registrant name, registrant organization, admin contact, tech contact, name server, status and DNSSEC. Your text is trimmed, lower-cased, and spaces and underscores are turned into hyphens; hyphens are ignored when comparing, so Creation Date, creation_date and creationdate all find the same entry. An exact name wins. Otherwise the text must be part of exactly one field name: expiry or admin works, but date or name fits several fields and gives no match. If the text is part of no field name but contains one, the longest contained name is used. The result is the matched field, a category (such as Dates, Contact or DNS) and a one-line meaning; anything else is reported as Unknown. Text shorter than three characters only matches exactly. The tool reads no live WHOIS data and does not look up a domain.
Worked example
Type Creation Date. The text becomes creation-date, which is an exact entry in the list. The tool shows the field creation-date, the category Dates and the meaning: the date the domain was first registered. Typing just expiry would instead match registry-expiry-date, with the meaning that it is the date the registration expires. A word that is in none of the 15 names, such as xyz, gives the category Unknown and the message No matching WHOIS field found.
Common mistakes
- Pasting a whole domain such as example.com. The box takes a field name, not a domain; the tool does not run a WHOIS query and shows Unknown.
- Typing a very general word such as date or name and expecting a best guess. These fit several fields, so the result is Unknown; type creation date, expiry date or name server instead.
- Typing the full line Registrar WHOIS Server and expecting the registrar entry. The longest field name inside the text wins, so you get the WHOIS server entry; write registrar alone for the registrar.
- Looking up status values such as pendingDelete. Only the general status field is listed, not each individual status code, so such a word returns Unknown.
- Typing a group word such as contact. It is not a field name by itself; use admin contact, tech contact or registrant.
About this calculator
A WHOIS record is the public registration data attached to a domain name, returned in response to a WHOIS query (port 43) or a registrar's web-based lookup. Fields like Creation Date, Registry Expiry Date, Registrar, Domain Status (e.g. clientTransferProhibited, pendingDelete) and Name Server follow the format defined by ICANN's Registration Data Access Protocol (RDAP) and the older RFC 3912 WHOIS protocol, though exact field names vary slightly by registry (Verisign for .com/.net, individual ccTLD registries for country codes).
This reference gives a short category and meaning for 15 common fields — domain name, registrar and its IANA ID, WHOIS server, the updated, creation and expiry dates, registrant, the registrant's name and organization, admin and tech contacts, name server, status and DNSSEC. Type a field name and you get what it represents; the status field is described only in general terms, as EPP status codes, so a specific code such as pendingDelete is not explained one by one. Domain registrars, network administrators, security researchers and sysadmins investigating phishing domains, planning a domain transfer, or auditing expiration dates rely on this kind of field-by-field breakdown instead of guessing from raw, inconsistently formatted WHOIS output.

This tool explains what a field name means; it does not look up any domain. When you read a real record, do not be alarmed if the registrant name, organization or contact lines show a privacy or redacted message, because public records often hide them. Use the status and expiry lines for the facts you can act on. Which field names in your records did you fail to find here, so we can see what to add?
