Waist-to-Hip-to-Height Composite Calculator
Enter waist, hip and height to get a combined adiposity composite score.

How it is calculated
All three measurements are entered in centimetres and must be above zero. The tool computes the waist-to-height ratio WHtR = waist ÷ height (shown as a percentage) and the waist-to-hip ratio WHR = waist ÷ hip. It then checks each against a cut-off: WHtR at or above 0.5, and WHR at or above 0.85 for women or 0.90 for men. The tool does not ask your sex, so a WHR from 0.85 up to just under 0.90 is treated as increased for women only. The score counts how many of the two markers are above their cut-off, out of 2; in that WHR band it is shown as a range, for example 0–1 / 2, because it depends on sex. The category text states which ratios are increased. These are screening cut-offs, not a diagnosis; talk to a clinician about your own measurements.
Worked example
Waist 85 cm, hip 100 cm, height 175 cm. WHtR: 85 ÷ 175 = 0.4857, shown as 48.57%, which is below the 0.5 cut-off. WHR: 85 ÷ 100 = 0.85, which reaches the women's cut-off (0.85) but not the men's (0.90). So the marker count is 0 for a man and 1 for a woman, and the tool shows 0–1 / 2 markers above the cut-off, with the category saying the waist-to-hip ratio is increased for women and normal for men.
Common mistakes
- Taking the waist at different places on different days. Measure at the same point each time, such as halfway between the lowest rib and the top of the hip bone, so changes are real.
- Entering inches for one measurement and centimetres for another. All three fields are in centimetres, so 34 inches must be converted to about 86 cm.
- Reading a range such as 0–1 / 2 as an error. It appears when the WHR is in the 0.85 to 0.90 band, where the answer depends on sex because the tool does not ask for it; pick the end that matches you.
- Treating the score as a percentage or comparing it with BMI. It only counts markers above a cut-off and has no direct link to body fat percentage.
- Measuring the hip over thick clothing or at the wrong level. Use the widest part of the buttocks, since an error of a few centimetres moves WHR noticeably, and a value of exactly 0.85 or 0.90 counts as above the cut-off.

About this calculator
This calculator blends two established anthropometric ratios — waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), where a value above 0.5 flags increased cardiometabolic risk, and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), a classic marker of central (android) fat distribution versus peripheral (gynoid) distribution — and checks each against its standard cut-off (WHtR 0.5; WHR 0.90 for men and 0.85 for women) from one set of measurements.
Researchers and clinicians favor waist-based measures like these over BMI alone because BMI cannot distinguish between fat mass and muscle mass, nor where fat is distributed on the body; visceral, abdominal fat carries substantially higher cardiovascular and metabolic disease risk than fat stored on the hips or thighs at the same total body weight, a distinction that has motivated alternative composite indices such as A Body Shape Index (ABSI) in the epidemiological literature.
Enter your waist, hip and height measurements, and this calculator returns both ratios, how many of the two are above their cut-offs, and a plain-language verdict. Because the form does not ask for sex, a WHR between 0.85 and 0.90 is shown as raised for women and normal for men.

Small differences in waist size can flip a marker. With a height of 175 cm and a hip of 100 cm, a waist of 85 cm shows 48.57% and 0.85, while 88 cm shows 50.29% and 0.88, which crosses the waist-to-height line. Measure at the same spot each time and watch the trend. These are screening ratios only; if a result worries you, a doctor can put it in context. Would a sex selector help you?
