Vershok to Centimeter Converter
Enter a value and pick a direction to convert between vershok and centimeters.

How it is calculated
The conversion uses one factor, 1 vershok = 4.445 cm. From vershok to centimetres: cm = vershok × 4.445. From centimetres to vershok: vershok = cm ÷ 4.445. You pick the direction, and results are rounded to four decimals. The tool also prints the reverse factor, 1 cm = 0.2250 vershok, which is 1 ÷ 4.445 rounded. Since 4.445 cm is exactly 1¾ inches, the same value can be checked against inches (1 inch = 2.54 cm). A negative input gives no result, since a length cannot be negative, and zero gives zero. A very small result keeps four significant digits instead of printing 0.0000 (0.00001 vershok shows as 0.00004445 cm).
Worked example
In old Russian horse measurements the height was given as the number of vershoks above a base of two arshins, about 142 cm, which equals 32 vershok at this factor. A horse described as "two arshins, three vershoks" is therefore 35 vershok tall. Entering 35 in the vershok-to-centimetre direction gives 35 × 4.445 = 155.5750 cm. Check: 32 vershok is 142.24 cm, and the extra 3 vershok add 13.335 cm, for a total of 155.575 cm.
Common mistakes
- Treating a horse's "3 vershoks" as the whole height. In that convention it is the amount above two arshins, so you must add the base (32 vershok) before converting.
- Confusing the direction. Typing a centimetre figure like 155.575 while the direction is vershok to centimetres returns about 691 cm instead of 35 vershok.
- Mixing the vershok with the inch because both are about the same size. The vershok is 4.445 cm and the inch is 2.54 cm, so 1¾ inches is one vershok, not one inch.
- Typing a negative number such as -5 for a difference or offset. A length cannot be negative, so the tool shows no result; enter the size without its sign.
- Rounding the factor to 4.4 cm for a quick check. Over a large value this adds a visible error; 100 vershok would be 440 cm instead of 444.5 cm.
About this calculator
The vershok was a traditional Russian unit of length, equal to exactly 4.445 cm (1¾ inches), used before Russia's adoption of the metric system in the early 20th century. It formed part of the old Russian system of measures alongside the arshin, sazhen, and versta.
One of its most enduring uses was in expressing horse height: a horse's height was traditionally given in vershoks above two arshins (a base of about 142 cm), a convention still occasionally referenced in Russian equestrian and breeding literature. Historians, genealogists, and translators working with old Russian documents, literature, or historical technical texts use a converter like this to make sense of measurements recorded in vershoks.
