Vegetable Yield Calculator
Enter your yield per plant and either plant count or bed area to estimate the harvest.
Result
How it is calculated
Total harvest is plants × yield per plant. The plant count comes from one of two sources. If you enter a number of plants above zero, that number is used and any area and spacing are ignored. Otherwise the tool computes plants = floor(area ÷ spacing), where area is the bed area in m² and spacing is the ground area one plant needs in m² (not the distance between plants in centimetres). The count is rounded down to a whole plant. Yield per plant is in kg. The result shows total kg, the plant count used and the per-plant yield. Without either a plant count or a positive area and spacing, or if the bed fits less than one plant, there is no result. Yield per plant is your own estimate.
Worked example
A bed of 12 m² where each plant needs 0.5 m², with an expected 4.5 kg per plant. The plant count is 12 ÷ 0.5 = 24, so 24 plants fit. The total expected harvest is 24 × 4.5 = 108.00 kg. If you had instead typed 10 in the number of plants field, the tool would ignore the bed and give 10 × 4.5 = 45.00 kg. A bed of only 1 m² with 1.5 m² per plant fits no plants and returns no result.
Common mistakes
- Entering plant spacing in centimetres, such as 50, instead of the area per plant in m²; 12 m² ÷ 50 then gives 0 plants and no result.
- Multiplying a row distance by a plant distance in the head and getting it wrong; area per plant is row spacing times in-row spacing, for example 0.5 m × 0.5 m = 0.25 m².
- Filling in both a plant count and an area, and expecting the area to matter; when the plant count is above zero the bed area is ignored.
- Using the best-case yield seen in a seed catalogue instead of a realistic figure for your soil and season, which inflates the whole forecast.
- Forgetting that paths and borders are not planted: use the planted area, not the total garden size.
About this calculator
Estimating a harvest before planting means multiplying a crop's typical yield per plant (a figure that varies widely — a tomato plant might give 4-6 kg over a season, a lettuce head just one) by however many plants will actually go in the ground. When plants aren't counted individually — as with a densely broadcast crop like carrots or spinach — the count is instead derived from bed area divided by the area each plant needs (in square metres), rounded down to whole plants, giving an equivalent plant count to multiply against.
This calculator takes your per-plant yield and either a direct plant count or a bed area in square metres with the area per plant, and estimates the total harvest you can expect. Home vegetable gardeners planning how much to plant for a household's needs, market gardeners and small-scale farmers forecasting a season's production, and community garden coordinators allocating bed space use it to plan planting quantities against realistic yield expectations rather than guessing and ending up with far too much zucchini or not nearly enough.

The spacing box wants the ground area one plant needs, not the distance between plants. If you plant on a 50 cm by 40 cm grid, enter 0.2, not 50. Fill in the plant count when you already know it; any area and spacing are then ignored. Remember that the yield per plant is your own estimate, and a crop that fruits over many weeks arrives as many small harvests. What crop and yield per plant are you assuming?
