Find the city and state for a US ZIP code.

Beverly Hills

How it is calculated

The tool accepts a five-digit ZIP or a ZIP+4 (such as 90210-1234) and looks the first five digits up in a bundled table of ZIP codes (GeoNames data). It returns the city name and the two-letter state code stored for that ZIP. Anything else, such as an address containing other numbers, fewer than five digits, or a code that is not in the table, gives no result. The ZIP+4 extension is accepted but only the first five digits are used. A ZIP code is a mail-delivery area, not a legal boundary, so one code can touch several places while the table lists a single city. No calculation is involved; it is a lookup.

Worked example

Enter 90210. The input is exactly five digits, so it is accepted. The table entry for 90210 reads Beverly Hills with the state code CA. The result is the city Beverly Hills and the state CA.

Common mistakes

  • Dropping the leading zero of an eastern ZIP, such as typing 2108 instead of 02108. That is a different, shorter code and finds nothing.
  • Assuming the city shown is the only place that ZIP serves. ZIP codes follow mail routes and can cover several towns or neighbourhoods, and the postal city may differ from the municipality you live in.
  • Entering a Canadian or UK postcode. Only five-digit US ZIP codes are in the table.
  • Expecting new or rarely used codes to be listed. A ZIP missing from the dataset returns nothing, even if it is valid.

About this calculator

This tool looks up the city and state tied to any five-digit US ZIP code, the postal routing system the United States Postal Service introduced in 1963 (and later extended with the ZIP+4 add-on for finer sorting). ZIP codes don't map neatly onto political boundaries — they were designed around mail-delivery routes, so a single code can span parts of a city or even cross a state line in rare cases, which is why a direct lookup is more reliable than guessing from a map.

E-commerce and shipping teams use ZIP lookups to validate addresses and calculate shipping zones, direct-mail marketers use them to target campaigns by region, and tax and insurance professionals use them to determine local jurisdictions and rates. Online shoppers, customer-service reps, and anyone filling out a form with an unfamiliar US address use it simply to confirm which city and state a ZIP code belongs to.

ZIP codes follow mail routes, not legal borders, so do not use the city shown to settle questions of tax or jurisdiction. Type only the ZIP itself, five digits or ZIP+4: an address with a street number in it is rejected rather than guessed at. This is a US-only table, so Turkish postal codes will not work. Which ZIP codes or regions would you like to see covered better?
