Unit Price Comparison Calculator
Find out which package is really cheaper per unit.

How it is calculated
For each product the tool divides the price by the quantity: unit price = price ÷ quantity. Products A and B each have a price in dollars and a quantity in any unit you choose, such as ounces, grams, sheets or items. The tool compares the two and reports which product is cheaper per unit, or Equal when the unit prices match. The comparison uses the exact figures (price A × quantity B against price B × quantity A), not the rounded ones, and treats differences far below a cent's fraction as a tie. It does not convert units, so both quantities must be in the same unit: 500 g and 1 kg cannot be mixed. Unit prices are displayed rounded to cents, so for goods that cost a fraction of a cent per unit the displayed figures can look identical even when one is cheaper; scale the quantity, for example compare per 100 g. Each quantity must be above zero and a price cannot be negative (0 is accepted), otherwise there is no result.
Worked example
Pack A is 16 oz for $3.20 and pack B is 24 oz for $4.32. Unit price A: 3.20 ÷ 16 = $0.20 per oz. Unit price B: 4.32 ÷ 24 = $0.18 per oz. B costs 2 cents less per ounce, so the tool names B as the cheaper one. Pack B is 8 oz larger and costs only $1.12 more, which fits its lower unit price. Buying 48 oz of A would cost $9.60, against $8.64 for B.
Common mistakes
- Mixing units, for example 500 g for A and 1 kg for B. The tool divides blindly, so convert both to grams (or both to kilograms) first.
- Entering the number of packs instead of the amount inside one pack. A 6-pack of 330 ml cans is 1,980 ml, not 6.
- Trusting the rounded unit prices alone. Two products can both display $0.00 per unit while one is cheaper, and the tool still names the right one, but you will not see the gap until you use a larger base unit such as 100 g.
- Ignoring the part of a big pack you will not use or that will spoil. The lower unit price only pays off if you use all of it.
- Comparing a sale price with a regular price. Enter the price you actually pay for each product at checkout.
About this calculator
A product's unit price — cost per ounce, per litre, per 100 grams, or whatever base unit fits the item — strips away the effect of package size so two differently-sized products can be compared on equal footing, which the sticker price alone can't do: a larger package isn't automatically the better deal, and "buy in bulk to save" isn't always true. The calculation itself is simple division, total price ÷ total quantity, but doing it consistently across two products with different package sizes and sometimes different units is where shoppers actually go wrong.
Many countries legally require grocery stores to display unit pricing on shelf labels for exactly this reason — consumer protection research consistently shows shoppers overestimate how much bulk packaging saves them, and retailers sometimes price the "value size" worse per unit than the regular size to capitalize on that assumption. Comparison shoppers use unit-price calculations not just at the grocery store but for anything sold in varying package sizes: cleaning supplies, pet food, cosmetics and even subscription services priced per unit of usage.
This calculator compares two products by their price and quantity and tells you which one is the cheaper deal per unit.
