Unicode Character Lookup
Look up the Unicode code point, decimal value, UTF-8 bytes, and HTML entity for any character.
Result
How it is calculated
The tool takes the first character of the text you type, ignores the rest, and reports its numeric identity. The code point is its Unicode number written as U+ followed by at least four uppercase hex digits. The decimal value is the same number in base 10. The UTF-8 field lists the bytes that encode the character, in hex: code points up to 127 use one byte, up to 2047 two, up to 65535 three, and higher ones four. The HTML entity is &#decimal;, which you can paste into a page. Empty input returns nothing. The tool does not name the character or its script.
Worked example
Type the euro sign €. Its code point is U+20AC. In hex 20AC equals 2 × 4096 + 0 × 256 + 10 × 16 + 12 = 8364 in decimal. Because 8364 lies between 2048 and 65535, UTF-8 uses three bytes: E2 82 AC. The HTML entity is €. All five values come from the one character you entered.
Common mistakes
- Pasting several characters and expecting a result for each. Only the first one is looked up.
- Mixing up the code point with the UTF-8 bytes. U+20AC is one number; E2 82 AC are the bytes stored in a file.
- Pasting a combined emoji or accented letter built from several code points, and getting only its first part.
- Typing the hex code such as 20AC into the field instead of the character itself.
About this calculator
This tool looks up any character's Unicode code point (U+ notation), its decimal value, its raw UTF-8 byte sequence, and its HTML numeric entity, covering letters, symbols, and emoji from any language or script.
Web developers use it to debug encoding issues and to insert special characters into HTML when a direct keystroke isn't available, and anyone curious about how a specific emoji or accented letter is actually stored internally can look it up here instantly.

This lookup is handy for debugging garbled text. If a page shows € where a euro sign should be, those three characters are the bytes E2 82 AC read with the wrong encoding. Look up each suspicious character and compare its UTF-8 bytes with what you expect. Remember only the first character you type is examined. Which odd characters have caused you trouble in a file or a web page?
