Typing Speed WPM Calculator

Enter characters typed, time and errors to find your typing speed.

How it is calculated

The tool treats one word as 5 characters. With words = chars ÷ 5 and minutes = seconds ÷ 60, gross speed is gross = words ÷ minutes. Net speed subtracts the uncorrected errors: net = gross − errors ÷ minutes, never below zero. Accuracy is (1 − errors ÷ words) × 100, also floored at zero. Note that errors is counted in words, not in characters: each mistyped word is one error. Time is entered in seconds and must be above zero, characters cannot be negative, and leaving errors empty counts as zero errors. Errors you fixed while typing should not be counted.

Worked example

You typed 1,500 characters in 300 seconds with 6 uncorrected word errors. Words = 1,500 ÷ 5 = 300 and minutes = 300 ÷ 60 = 5. Gross speed = 300 ÷ 5 = 60.0 WPM. The error penalty is 6 ÷ 5 = 1.2, so net speed = 60 − 1.2 = 58.8 WPM. Accuracy = (1 − 6 ÷ 300) × 100 = 98.00%.

Common mistakes

  • Entering the time in minutes. The field is seconds, so a 5-minute test must be typed as 300, otherwise the speed comes out 60 times too high.
  • Entering the word count in the characters field. Characters are counted (including spaces), and the tool divides by 5 itself.
  • Counting mistyped characters as errors. The error field counts wrong words; ten wrong keystrokes spread over four words is 4 errors.
  • Including mistakes you corrected before moving on. Only uncorrected errors reduce the net speed.
  • Comparing results with a test that defines a word differently or uses other penalties; the 5-characters-per-word convention is used here, and other sites may score the same test differently.

About this calculator

Typing speed is conventionally measured in words per minute, where a “word” is standardized as 5 characters (including spaces) to keep the metric consistent across texts. Gross WPM = (total characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes elapsed, while net WPM subtracts a penalty for mistakes: net WPM = gross WPM − (errors ÷ minutes). Accuracy is separately reported as (1 − errors ÷ words typed) × 100, where words typed = characters ÷ 5.

This calculator takes the characters typed, the time taken in seconds, and the number of uncorrected errors (counted as words), and returns gross WPM, net WPM, and accuracy. Data-entry and transcription employers use this exact formula to screen candidates against a minimum WPM requirement, and students preparing for typing certification tests use it to track their progress toward a target speed and accuracy threshold.

Count characters including spaces and punctuation, since that is what the five-character word is built on. For a steadier number, type the same passage in longer runs, because a 30-second burst can flatter or punish you more than a few minutes will. Errors here means whole words that stayed wrong, one per word, not each wrong key. What typing test or text do you take your numbers from?
