Time Blocking Calculator
Enter your available hours and block lengths to plan your focus blocks.
Result
How it is calculated
Enter the hours you have available, the length of one focus block in minutes and the length of the break after it in minutes. If block length is empty the tool uses 90, and if break length is empty it uses 15. It treats each block plus its break as one cycle:
cycle = block + break
blocks = floor( hours × 60 ÷ cycle )
productive minutes = blocks × block
total break minutes = blocks × break
Only complete cycles count, so any remainder shorter than a cycle is left over. Because every block is followed by a break, a final block that fits without its break is not counted. Hours and block length must be above zero; a break of 0 is allowed.
Worked example
You have 6 hours, use 90-minute blocks and take 15-minute breaks.
- Available time: 6 × 60 = 360 minutes.
- Cycle length: 90 + 15 = 105 minutes.
- Blocks: 360 ÷ 105 = 3.43, rounded down to 3 blocks.
- Productive time: 3 × 90 = 270 min. Break time: 3 × 15 = 45 min.
Three cycles use 315 minutes, so 45 minutes remain unscheduled, not enough for another full cycle.
Common mistakes
- Expecting a block that fits without its break to count. With 1.5 hours (90 minutes) and a 90-minute block plus a 15-minute break, the tool returns 0 blocks, because a cycle is 105 minutes. Shorten the break or add time.
- Entering hours in minutes. The first field is hours, so 6 hours is 6, not 360.
- Entering the block in hours. Block and break are in minutes, so a 90-minute block is 90, not 1.5.
- Treating the productive minutes as guaranteed output. The tool counts scheduled focus time and does not allow for meetings, interruptions or a slow start.
- Forgetting the leftover. The remaining minutes (45 in the example) are not shown in the results, so subtract the cycles used from your total if you want to fill the gap with a shorter task.
About this calculator
Time blocking is a scheduling method where you divide your available hours into fixed-length chunks dedicated to a single task, separated by short breaks — rather than working from an open-ended to-do list. It's associated with productivity systems used by people like Cal Newport (who writes about "deep work") and is popular precisely because it turns a vague intention to "focus more" into a concrete number of blocks on a calendar.
This calculator takes your total available time along with your chosen block and break lengths, and works out how many complete focus blocks actually fit, plus the total productive minutes versus time spent on breaks. It's a practical planning step for knowledge workers, students, and freelancers structuring a workday, letting them see upfront whether their planned schedule is realistic before committing to it.

Because of the leftover time, block length can change the total more than it first seems. On an 8 hour day, 90-minute blocks with 15-minute breaks give 4 blocks and 360 productive minutes, while 50-minute blocks with 10-minute breaks give 8 blocks and 400. That is just arithmetic, not advice on focus. What block length works for the kind of work you do?
