Tiered Commission Calculator
Enter sales, the tier-1 threshold, and the tier-1 and tier-2 rates to find the total commission.

How it is calculated
This tool has exactly two tiers, and each rate applies only to the slice of sales in its own bracket, not to the whole amount. tier 1 commission = min(sales, tier1_limit) × tier1_pct ÷ 100 and tier 2 commission = max(0, sales − tier1_limit) × tier2_pct ÷ 100. The total is their sum, in dollars. Sales and the tier-1 limit are amounts for the same period (month, quarter or year); the two rates are percentages between 0 and 100. Sales at or below the limit earn only tier 1, so tier 2 shows zero. A limit of zero means all sales earn the tier-2 rate. The tool does not require tier 2 to be higher than tier 1 and does not support a third bracket, accelerators on the whole amount or clawbacks. Empty or negative fields, or a rate above 100, give no result.
Worked example
You sold 80000 in the period. The first 50000 earns 5% and everything above earns 8%. Step 1: tier 1 = 50000 × 5 ÷ 100 = $2,500.00. Step 2: sales above the limit = 80000 − 50000 = 30000. Step 3: tier 2 = 30000 × 8 ÷ 100 = $2,400.00. Step 4: total commission = 2500 + 2400 = $4,900.00. That is an effective 6.125% of all sales, between the two rates because only the upper slice earns 8%.
Common mistakes
- Applying the higher rate to all sales once the limit is crossed. In this structure, 8% applies only to the 30000 above the limit; a plan that pays 8% on everything is a different design and gives 6400 here.
- Entering the tier-1 limit as a cumulative target for a longer period than the sales figure covers, for example a yearly threshold against monthly sales.
- Typing rates as fractions (0.05, 0.08) rather than percent. They are read as 0.05% and 0.08%, and a rate above 100 gives no result.
- Expecting a third tier. The tool has only one threshold, so a plan with 5%, 7% and 10% brackets must be worked out in separate steps.
- Leaving the second rate empty when no higher bracket exists. An empty field gives no result; enter the same rate in both tiers instead.
About this calculator
Tiered commission structures pay salespeople a higher commission rate as they cross successive sales volume thresholds within a period, rather than a single flat rate on every dollar sold — for example, 5% commission on the first $50,000 in sales, 7% on the next $50,000, and 10% on everything above $100,000. Each tier’s rate typically applies only to the revenue that falls within that bracket, similar to how progressive income tax brackets work.
This structure is designed to reward and accelerate performance from top sellers, giving an escalating incentive to push past each threshold rather than coast once a base quota is hit. This calculator handles two tiers: you enter your total sales, the first tier's limit and the rate for each tier, and it calculates the commission bracket by bracket, showing the commission from each tier and the total commission earned. For a plan with more than two tiers, work through it in steps, one pair of tiers at a time, and add the results.
