Test Score / Grade Calculator

Turn correct answers into a score and grade.

Result

84.00%
B

How it is calculated

The score is the share of correct answers: Percent = Correct / Total × 100. The letter comes from fixed cut-offs: 90% and above is A, 80% to below 90% is B, 70% to below 80% is C, 60% to below 70% is D, and anything under 60% is F. Total must be above zero and correct cannot be negative. If correct is larger than total there is no result, since a score above 100% is not possible. Many schools and teachers use different cut-offs or plus and minus grades, so treat the letter as one common scale only.

Worked example

A student answers 42 of 50 questions correctly. Divide: 42 / 50 = 0.84. Multiply by 100 to get 84%. That is at least 80 but below 90, so the grade is B. The result is 84.00% with letter grade B. Two more correct answers (44 of 50 = 88%) would still be a B; reaching A needs 45 of 50.

Common mistakes

  • Entering the number of wrong answers in the correct field.
  • Using question counts when questions carry different weights; enter points earned and total points instead.
  • Assuming a score of 89.9% rounds up to A; the cut-off is applied to the exact percentage.
  • Assuming your school uses the same scale; the letters here follow a common 90/80/70/60 split.
  • Leaving unanswered questions out of the total; they count as wrong, so Total must be the full number of questions.

About this calculator

This calculator divides the number of correct answers by the total number of questions to get a percentage score, then maps that percentage onto a standard letter grade scale (A, B, C, D, F) using common grading cutoffs.

Students use it right after a test to see their grade before the teacher hands papers back, and teachers use it to quickly convert a raw "17 out of 20" style score into a percentage and letter grade for the gradebook.

The letter grade uses a fixed US-style scale of 90, 80, 70 and 60 percent, which is not how most Turkish schools, and many other systems, mark. Check your own school's scale before relying on the letter. Also remember that exams with negative marking or weighted sections need an adjusted correct count first. If you enter more correct answers than the total, the tool shows no result. Which grading scale would you like to see added here?
