Final Grade Calculator

Find what you need on the final to pass.

How it is calculated

The tool finds the score you need on the final exam to reach a target course grade. It assumes the final counts for a share w (in percent) of the course, and the work done so far fills the remaining 100 − w. With current as your average on that earlier work and target as the overall grade you want, the formula is needed = (target − current × (100 − w) / 100) / (w / 100). All grades are on the same scale, normally 0 to 100. The weight must be above 0 and at most 100. The result is not capped, so a figure above 100% means that the target cannot be reached without extra credit, and a negative figure means you already meet it.

Worked example

Your average so far is 82, the final is worth 30% of the course, and you want 85 overall. The earlier work counts for 70%, so it contributes 82 × 70 / 100 = 57.4 points. You still need 85 − 57.4 = 27.6 points from the final. Divide by its weight: 27.6 / 0.30 = 92.00%. You would need to score 92 on the final. If a 90 were enough, the target would be 84.4 instead.

Common mistakes

  • Entering the final's weight as 0.3 instead of 30; the weight is a percentage.
  • Using the average of the final and the earlier work as the course grade, when the final counts for only its weight.
  • Entering a letter grade or a grade-point value instead of the percentage average on the same scale as the target.
  • Forgetting that other pending assignments are part of the "current" grade, so the weight of the final should only be what remains.
  • Believing a result above 100 can be reached; it only shows that the target is out of range without extra credit.

About this calculator

Given your current grade, the weight of the final exam, and the grade you want to end up with, this calculator solves backward using target = (goal − current × (1 − examWeight)) / examWeight to tell you exactly what score you need on the final.

Students use it before finals week to know whether they can afford a bad day, need a solid pass, or are already safe regardless of the exam result, and it's equally useful for figuring out the minimum score needed just to avoid a failing grade. A required score above 100% means the target is out of reach, and 0% or below means it is already guaranteed; the calculator shows the number as it is, without a separate warning.

A result above 100 percent means the target is out of reach on the final alone, and a very low or negative figure means you have effectively already secured it. Before giving up on a high target, rerun the numbers with a slightly lower goal such as the next letter grade, and check your syllabus for extra credit, dropped scores or curving, which this tool does not model. What overall grade are you aiming for?
