Tennis UTR Estimate Calculator

Enter your average opponent UTR and games-won percentage to estimate your UTR.

How it is calculated

The tool starts from the average UTR of your opponents and shifts it by how far your share of games won is from an even 50%. adjustment = (games_won% − 50) ÷ 10 and estimated UTR = opponent average + adjustment. Each 10 percentage points above 50% adds one UTR point; each 10 below subtracts one. The result is then clamped to the valid scale: anything below 1.00 shows as 1.00 and anything above 16.50 shows as 16.50. Games won must be between 0 and 100, and the opponent average must itself be on the 1 to 16.5 scale; values outside those ranges show no result. It is a straight-line rule of thumb, not Universal Tennis's own algorithm, which also weighs match recency and score margins, so use it only as a rough guide.

Worked example

You played opponents who average a UTR of 8.5 and won 62% of the games across those matches. Adjustment: (62 − 50) ÷ 10 = +1.20. Estimate: 8.5 + 1.20 = 9.70, which sits inside the 1 to 16.5 range, so no clamping is needed. The tool shows 9.70 UTR, a difference of +1.20 UTR from your opponents' average and a games-won figure of 62%. Winning only 38% instead would give 8.5 − 1.20 = 7.30 UTR.

Common mistakes

  • Entering games won as a fraction such as 0.62. The field takes a percentage from 0 to 100, so 0.62 counts as 0.62% and an 8.5 opponent average becomes 3.56 UTR, almost five points too low.
  • Using your own current UTR as the opponent average. The starting number should be the average rating of the opponents you faced.
  • Counting sets or matches won instead of games won. The percentage must be games won out of all games played.
  • Mixing in a few lopsided matches and expecting the result to follow. One 6-0 6-0 win against a much weaker player pulls the games percentage up without showing you can beat stronger players.
  • Reading a clamped answer such as 16.50 or 1.00 as exact. The tool simply stops at the scale's ends: an opponent average of 16 with 80% of games won shows 16.50 UTR, not 19.

About this calculator

Universal Tennis Rating (UTR) is a single-scale, 1 to 16.5 rating that lets players of any age, gender, or nationality be compared on one number, calculated by Universal Tennis’s algorithm from the outcomes and score-lines of a player’s actual matches against other rated opponents — not from tournament results or rankings points. The official algorithm weighs the strength of each opponent (their own UTR), the margin of victory, and match recency, dropping outlier results.

This calculator provides a simplified estimate rather than the full algorithm: it takes the player’s average opponent UTR and the percentage of games won across recent matches, and adjusts the opponent average up or down based on how far above or below 50% that win rate sits, then clamps the result to the valid 1–16.5 scale. Players and coaches use an estimate like this to gauge where a player’s rating is likely trending between official updates, or to sanity-check the official number, since UTR is widely used by college coaches for recruiting and by tournament directors for seeding and flight assignment.
