Tax Refund Estimator Calculator
Compare what you paid in during the year with what you actually owe.
Result
How it is calculated
The tool does not work out your tax; it compares what you have paid with the tax figure you enter. total payments = total_withheld + other_credits and balance = total payments − tax_owed. A positive balance is shown as the refund and a negative one as the amount owed, with the other line at $0.00. Tax owed is the total tax on your return for the year, taken from a tax calculation or a draft return; it is not the amount still left to pay. Credits reduce the bill directly, in the same currency, and may be left empty (counted as 0). Withheld and tax owed are required, and a negative value in any field shows no result. Rules differ by country and year.
Worked example
Your paychecks had 9,800 withheld during the year, your return shows a total tax of 8,600, and you qualify for 500 of credits. Total payments: 9,800 + 500 = $10,300.00. Balance: 10,300 − 8,600 = 1,700. That is positive, so the estimated refund is $1,700.00 and the amount owed is $0.00. If withholding had been only 7,800, payments would be $8,300.00 and you would owe $300.00 instead.
Common mistakes
- Entering your taxable income as the tax owed. The field takes the tax itself, so with 60,000 of income and 8,600 of tax you type 8600.
- Entering only part of the year's withholding, such as the amount on the last payslip. Use the year-to-date total from your final payslip or year-end statement.
- Putting a deduction in the credits field. A credit reduces the tax one-for-one, while a deduction only reduces income, so it must be reflected in the tax owed figure first.
- Typing a balance already owing as a negative number. Negative values give no result; enter the amounts as positive figures and read the owed line.
- Treating the estimate as final. A change in income, a missed form or a rule change can move the actual refund.
About this calculator
Your tax refund or balance due is simply the difference between what you have already paid toward your tax bill during the year — mainly withholding from your paychecks, plus any tax credits you qualify for — and your actual total tax liability once the year closes: if withholding and credits exceed what you owe, you get a refund; if they fall short, you owe the difference.
Most employees check this every spring during filing season, but it is also useful earlier in the year to catch a withholding mismatch before it becomes a surprise — someone who changed jobs, got a raise, or picked up freelance income mid-year can end up under-withheld without adjusting their W-4, turning an expected refund into an unexpected bill.
