How it is calculated
The tool applies three simple rules. Tortillas: tortillas = guests × tacos per guest, so it counts exactly one tortilla per taco and leaves no allowance for tearing or double-wrapping. Protein: protein = guests × 0.25 lb. Cheese: cheese = guests × 0.1 lb. Both are fixed amounts per person in pounds, and they do not change when you raise or lower the tacos per guest. If you leave tacos per guest empty it assumes 3. Guests and tacos per guest must both be above zero, otherwise there is no result. Tortillas are shown as a whole number and the weights to two decimals. Add your own buffer for extra servings, and handle toppings such as salsa, lettuce or beans separately.
Worked example
A party of 24 guests with 3 tacos each. Tortillas: 24 × 3 = 72, shown as 72 tortillas. Protein: 24 × 0.25 = 6.00 lb. Cheese: 24 × 0.1 = 2.40 lb. If the same group were expected to eat 5 tacos each, the tortilla count would rise to 120, but the protein would stay at 6.00 lb and the cheese at 2.40 lb, because those two quantities depend only on the number of guests.
Common mistakes
- Assuming protein and cheese grow with the tacos-per-guest setting. They are fixed per person here, so for hungry crowds you should add more by hand.
- Buying exactly the tortilla count shown. The tool allows one tortilla per taco, so soft tortillas that tear or get doubled up will run out early without a spare pack.
- Entering the number of tables or households instead of the number of people eating.
- Reading the weights as kilograms. The protein and cheese are given in pounds (lb), and one pound is about 0.45 kg.
- Counting children as full guests when they eat fewer tacos. Reduce the guest total or the tacos per guest to match the real crowd.
About this calculator
Sizing a self-serve taco bar is a catering math problem built from per-guest ratios: a typical guest eats about two to three tacos, each taco needs a tortilla (soft tortillas often tear, so some hosts double up), and around a quarter pound of protein and a tenth of a pound of shredded cheese per guest is a standard serving. Multiplying the tortillas by your guest count and tacos-per-person estimate, and the protein and cheese by your guest count, gives shopping quantities instead of a guess.
Caterers and home party hosts use this kind of scaling to avoid running out of tortillas mid-line or over-buying expensive protein, since taco bars are typically priced and portioned per head at events like birthdays, taco Tuesdays, and office lunches. Without a figure for tacos per person, 3 is assumed, and protein and cheese are shown in pounds.

Protein and cheese here are flat amounts per guest, so changing tacos per guest only changes the tortilla count. For 20 guests at 3 tacos each the tool gives 60 tortillas, 5.00 lb of protein and 2.00 lb of cheese. If your guests are hungry or the menu has few sides, raise the protein yourself. Which fillings do you serve, and how far do your quantities drift from these?
