Swim Pace Calculator
Calculate your swim pace per 100m and average speed
Result
How it is calculated
Swim pace is quoted per 100 m. The tool turns your time into seconds, T = minutes × 60 + seconds, then scales to 100 m: pace = T / (distance / 100). The pace is rounded to the nearest second and shown as m:ss. Average speed is v = distance / T in metres per second, to two decimals. Distance is in metres and must be above zero, and the total time must be above zero. Minutes or seconds may be left empty (counted as 0), so a time of 90 seconds can be entered in one field. Because pace is rounded to whole seconds, two close swims can show the same pace.
Worked example
You swim 400 m in 7 minutes 30 seconds. Total time T = 7 × 60 + 30 = 450 s. Pace per 100 m = 450 / (400 / 100) = 450 / 4 = 112.5 s, which rounds to 113 s, or 1 minute 53 seconds. Speed = 400 / 450 = 0.89 m/s. The result is a pace of 1:53 /100m and an average speed of 0.89 m/s.
Common mistakes
- Entering the distance in yards or kilometres. The field is metres; a 1.5 km swim is 1500.
- Typing the time as 7.30 in the minutes field when you mean 7 minutes 30 seconds. That is 7.3 minutes, i.e. 7 min 18 s.
- Including rests at the wall in the total time and expecting a pure swimming pace.
- Comparing pool and open-water paces directly; currents, turns and sighting change the real distance and speed.
- Leaving both minutes and seconds empty, which gives no result.
About this calculator
This calculator turns your swim distance and time into a pace per 100 meters (mm:ss) and your average speed in meters per second — the two numbers swimmers actually use to track and compare performance.
Pool swimmers, triathletes, and coaches use it during training to check whether a set was swum at the target pace, and to plan race splits ahead of a competition based on a goal finish time.

A quick way to use the pace: divide it by the number of lengths in 100 m. In a 25 m pool a 1:53 pace means roughly 28 seconds per length, which is easier to check against the pace clock while you swim. Remember the pace averages everything you enter, so wall rests inflate it. What distance do you plan most sets around, 400 m, 1500 m or open water?
