How it is calculated
The refund is the part of the price that belongs to days you did not use: daily_rate = price ÷ period_days, unused_days = period_days − days_used, refund = daily_rate × unused_days. The price is what you paid for the whole billing period, Days in billing period is the length of that period in days, and Days used before cancel is how many days had passed when you cancelled. If Days used before cancel is larger than the period, the engine caps it at the period length and the refund becomes zero. Amounts are displayed with the dollar sign and two decimals, while the unused days are a whole number. The calculation is purely day-based: it ignores cancellation fees, taxes, and any minimum-term rules in your contract.
Worked example
You paid 99 for an annual plan (365 days) and cancel after 100 days. The daily rate is 99 ÷ 365 ≈ $0.27. Unused days: 365 − 100 = 265. The refund is 99 × 265 ÷ 365 = $71.88. The part you consumed is $27.12, and $27.12 + $71.88 equals the original 99. Note that the daily rate on screen is rounded to cents, but the refund is calculated from the unrounded value.
Common mistakes
- Counting the cancellation day wrongly: Days used before cancel should be the days already consumed, so a mismatch of one day changes the refund by one daily rate.
- Entering 12 (months) or 1 (year) as the period: the field is in days, so an annual plan is 365 (or 366), a monthly plan 28 to 31.
- Multiplying the rounded daily rate by the unused days: $0.27 × 265 gives $71.55, not $71.88, because the daily rate is rounded for display only.
- Expecting the result to match the company's actual refund: many providers refund only full unused months, charge a fee, or refund nothing, and this tool applies none of those rules.
About this calculator
Many subscription services that offer prorated refunds calculate them on a simple time-remaining basis: refund = amount paid × (unused days remaining in the billing period ÷ total days in the period), so canceling a $120 annual plan after 90 days of a 365-day term returns roughly $90.41 rather than a flat percentage or nothing at all. The exact policy varies by company — some refund only unused full months, others go day-by-day, and some offer no proration at all.
This calculator takes the amount paid, the billing period length, and the number of days already used, and returns the prorated refund under a straightforward day-based model. Subscribers requesting a cancellation refund, customer support teams processing requests consistently, and SaaS billing teams designing or auditing a proration policy use it to see the expected refund before a request is filed or approved.

Enter what was actually charged for the period, after any coupon or introductory discount, not the list price, because the pro-rata share is only meaningful against the amount you paid. If you are writing to support, the used-amount line is handy: it shows the value you consumed, so you can state your expected refund and how you got it. Is the refund you were offered higher or lower than the day-based figure here? Tell us how the provider calculated it.
