How it is calculated

Enter the amount charged to the customer, the percentage fee and the fixed fee per transaction, in dollars. The tool computes

fee = amount × percentage ÷ 100 + fixed fee

net = amount − fee

effective rate = fee ÷ amount × 100

If the percentage field is left empty the tool uses 2.9, and if the fixed fee is empty it uses 0.30; typing 0 is respected as zero. The amount must be greater than zero. Each result is rounded to cents on its own, so fee plus net can differ from the amount by one cent. The effective rate is higher than the percentage alone because the fixed fee is spread over the charge. Your real rates depend on your account, card type and country; this tool simply applies whatever numbers you type, and it does not add extra charges such as currency conversion or dispute fees.

Worked example

A customer pays $50, with fees of 2.9% + $0.30.

  1. Percentage part: 50 × 2.9 ÷ 100 = $1.45.
  2. Add the fixed fee: 1.45 + 0.30 = $1.75.
  3. Net payout: 50 − 1.75 = $48.25.
  4. Effective rate: 1.75 ÷ 50 × 100 = 3.50%.

On a $5 charge the same rates cost $0.45, an effective rate of 8.90%, which shows why small sales lose a bigger share to the fixed fee.

Common mistakes

  • Entering the percentage as a decimal such as 0.029. The field is already in percent, so type 2.9; 0.029 would give a fee of almost nothing.
  • Leaving the fee fields empty and assuming they mean zero. Empty fields fall back to 2.9% and $0.30, so type 0 if a fee does not apply to you.
  • Using the net result as the price to charge. To receive an exact amount you must raise the charge so that the net after the fee equals your target; subtracting the fee from the target is not enough.
  • Judging profitability by the percentage alone. On small charges the fixed fee dominates, so check the effective rate for your typical order value.
  • Expecting refunds or disputes to be included. The tool covers a single successful charge only.

About this calculator

Payment processors like Stripe charge a fee on every card transaction, typically structured as a percentage of the charge plus a small fixed amount (for example, 2.9% + $0.30 on standard domestic cards), deducted before the funds reach the merchant's account.

Because the fee scales with transaction size while the fixed component stays constant, its effect on margins varies a lot between a $5 sale and a $500 one. E-commerce merchants, SaaS businesses, and freelancers use a calculator like this to see the exact net payout on a charge, price products so a target margin survives processing fees, or reconcile what actually lands in their bank account against what the customer paid.

    A practical use is setting a minimum order value. Because the fixed part is spread over the charge, you can work backwards: with 2.9% plus 0.30 and a goal of keeping the effective rate near 4%, a charge needs to be about 27.30 or more. Try that figure and watch the effective rate line. Swap in your own rates the same way. Tell us what order sizes your fees start to bite at.
