Stones and Pounds to Kg Converter

Enter stones and pounds to convert to kilograms.

How it is calculated

The tool first turns the weight into pounds, then into kilograms: total lb = stones × 14 + pounds and kg = total lb × 0.45359237. One stone is exactly 14 lb and the pound is defined as 0.45359237 kg. The pounds box is optional; left empty it counts as 0. Neither value can be negative. The pounds box is not limited to 13, so 20 lb is simply added to the total (11 st 20 lb gives 174 lb). Both the kilograms and the combined pound total are shown, rounded to two decimals.

Worked example

A scale reads 11 st 4 lb. Step 1: 11 × 14 = 154 lb. Step 2: 154 + 4 = 158 lb in total. Step 3: 158 × 0.45359237 = 71.67 kg. The tool shows 71.67 kg together with the 158.00 lb total.

Common mistakes

  • Typing 11.4 into the stones box to mean 11 st 4 lb; 0.4 stone is 5.6 lb, not 4 lb. Use the separate pounds box.
  • Multiplying stones by 6.35 and forgetting to add the extra pounds separately.
  • Assuming the pounds box rolls over past 13; 11 st 20 lb is treated as 174 lb, not as 12 st 6 lb.
  • Confusing the stone with the US short ton or the 100-lb hundredweight; the stone is always 14 lb.

About this calculator

The stone is a British imperial unit still used for reporting body weight in the UK and Ireland, defined as exactly 14 pounds. Converting to metric first combines stones and pounds into a single pound figure (stones × 14 + pounds), then applies the standard 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg conversion factor to get kilograms.

This conversion comes up constantly for anyone reading a UK weight — a doctor's scale reading “11 st 4 lb,” a boxing or wrestling weight class, or a British news article — who needs the equivalent in kilograms for medical charts, international sports federations, or everyday comparison with the metric system used almost everywhere else.

Two decimals can look more precise than the original reading is. A bathroom scale that shows 11 st 4 lb is already rounded to the nearest pound or so, so a result like 71.67 kg is really about 71.7. When the figure goes into a BMI or dosage chart that expects kilograms, rounding to one decimal is enough. Is it a weigh-in, a medical form or something else you are converting for?
