Sparge Water Volume Calculator
Calculate the sparge water volume for your mash from your pre-boil target, mash water and grain bill.
Result
How it is calculated
The tool works back from the pre-boil volume you want. absorbed = grain weight × 0.125, first runnings = mash water − absorbed and sparge water = pre-boil volume − first runnings. The constant 0.125 is gallons of water retained per pound of grain, so the calculation is in US gallons and pounds, the form is labelled gal and lb, and the answer is printed in gal. The target is the volume in the kettle before the boil, so there is no allowance for boil-off, trub or equipment dead space. Two situations show no result: the grain would absorb more water than you mashed with (no first runnings at all), or the first runnings already exceed the pre-boil target, which would make the sparge negative.
Worked example
You want 7 gal pre-boil, you mash 11 lb of grain in 4 gal of water. Absorbed = 11 × 0.125 = 1.375 gal. First runnings = 4 − 1.375 = 2.625 gal. Sparge water = 7 − 2.625 = 4.375, shown as 4.38 gal. Result: sparge with 4.38 gal of water. With no grain at all (0 lb) and the same numbers, sparge would be 3.00 gal.
Common mistakes
- Entering litres and kilograms. The 0.125 constant is gallons per pound, so use US gallons and pounds, or convert a litre-and-kilogram recipe first.
- Entering the full boil volume (with boil-off) as the target. The target here is the pre-boil volume, which is what you need in the kettle before the boil starts.
- Forgetting that grain absorbs water. Using mash water as the first runnings volume would overstate it and leave you short of the target pre-boil volume.
- Entering mash water that is more than the pre-boil target allows (for example 9 gal of mash water for a 7 gal pre-boil with 11 lb of grain), or a tiny mash volume with a huge grain bill. Both show no result.
- Counting the sparge water temperature or equipment loss as part of the volume. The tool deals only with water volume and has no allowance for dead space.
About this calculator
In all-grain brewing, sparging is the step where hot water rinses residual sugars out of the mashed grain bed after the initial mash runoff, and getting the sparge volume right is what makes the difference between hitting your target pre-boil volume and either diluting the wort too much or leaving sugar behind in the grain. The calculation works backward from the target pre-boil kettle volume: sparge water needed = pre-boil volume − first-runnings volume (mash water minus what the grain bill absorbs, using an absorption of 0.125 gallons per pound of grain, about 1 liter per kilogram). It does not add any allowance for boil-off or equipment deadspace, so work those into your pre-boil target yourself.
Home and craft brewers use this calculation every time they build a recipe for a new grain bill or batch size, since pre-boil volume, mash water and grain absorption all shift with recipe changes, and a miscalculated sparge volume is one of the most common causes of an off-target original gravity on brew day. It applies to both batch sparging and fly sparging setups, though the target numbers plug into the same underlying volume math either way.
This calculator takes your target pre-boil volume and mash water volume in US gallons and your total grain weight in pounds, and returns the sparge water volume you need to add in gallons. If the grain would absorb more water than you mashed with, or the mash already exceeds the pre-boil target, it shows no result.
