Sod Calculator

Find how much sod you need.

How it is calculated

The tool adds a 5% allowance for cutting and waste, then divides by the coverage of one roll. Order area = lawn area × 1.05 and rolls = ceil(order area / 0.836), where area is in square metres and 0.836 m² is the coverage assumed for one roll. The roll count is always rounded up to a whole roll, because you cannot buy a fraction. The area must be zero or more. Complex lawns with curves, many corners or slopes may need more than 5%, and roll sizes differ between suppliers, so check the coverage printed on the product.

Worked example

A lawn of 120 m². With 5% extra: 120 × 1.05 = 126.00 m². Rolls = 126 / 0.836 = 150.7, which rounds up to 151 rolls. Because of the rounding up, a few square metres of spare turf remain for repairs.

Common mistakes

  • Entering the area in square feet or square yards instead of square metres.
  • Measuring only the bounding rectangle of a lawn with curved beds and overestimating, or ignoring odd corners and underestimating.
  • Assuming every supplier sells rolls of the same size; the 0.836 m² per roll is an assumption.
  • Adding extra waste on top of the 5% that is already included.

About this calculator

This calculator works out how much sod (turf) you need for a lawn: enter the area to cover, in square metres, and it adds a 5% cutting allowance and returns the area to order plus the number of rolls, based on a standard roll of 0.836 m².

Homeowners planting a new lawn and landscapers quoting installation jobs use it to avoid under-ordering (which means a delayed delivery) or over-ordering (which means wasted sod that dies before it can be laid). It saves the manual math of converting an odd-shaped yard into standard sod units.

For curved lawns, split the shape into rectangles and triangles, measure each in metres and add them up before entering the total. The roll size here is 0.836 m², close to one square yard, so check whether your supplier sells by roll or by area and compare like with like. Turf is perishable, so order close to the day you will lay it. What shape is your lawn?
