How much does smoking cost me?

How it is calculated
The tool converts your habit into money: daily = cigarettes per day / cigarettes per pack × price per pack. Then monthly = daily × 30, yearly = daily × 365 and 10-year = yearly × 10. If you leave the pack size blank it assumes 20 cigarettes per pack. Prices are shown in dollars, but the arithmetic works the same in any currency you type in. The projection is flat: it uses today's price for all ten years and ignores price rises, interest you could have earned on the money, health costs and any days you do not smoke.
Worked example
Someone smokes 15 cigarettes a day from packs of 20 costing 6 each. That is 15 / 20 = 0.75 packs a day, so the daily cost is 0.75 × 6 = $4.50. Monthly: 4.50 × 30 = $135.00. Yearly: 4.50 × 365 = $1,642.50. Over ten years: 1,642.50 × 10 = $16,425.00. The first figure is the daily cost, $4.50.
Common mistakes
- Entering the price of a carton (10 packs) as the price of one pack.
- Leaving the pack size at 20 when the packs hold 25 or another number.
- Entering cigarettes per week instead of per day.
- Forgetting that the monthly figure uses a flat 30 days, so twelve months do not exactly equal the yearly total.
- Expecting the result to include price increases or the savings returns you could earn.
About this calculator
This calculator turns a smoking habit into hard numbers by dividing the cigarettes smoked per day by the pack size to get packs per day, then multiplying that by the price per pack, then projecting that daily cost out to monthly, yearly and 10-year totals — a horizon long enough to show how a seemingly small daily expense compounds into a large sum.
It is commonly used by smokers considering quitting who want a concrete financial reason alongside the health one, and sometimes by health campaigns or counselors illustrating how the money saved by quitting could instead cover a vacation, a car payment, or years of savings.

For a reality check, compare the monthly figure with what you actually spent at the shop last month. If the two differ a lot, the cigarettes-per-day number is probably off, because weekends and stressful days are easy to forget. Averaging over a full week gives a steadier daily count. The result is only today's price multiplied out. What would you do with the yearly amount?
