Discretionary Income Calculator
See what income is left after your essential expenses.
Result
How it is calculated
The tool subtracts the money you must spend from the money you receive. Monthly = I − E, Annual = Monthly × 12 and Share = (I − E) / I × 100. I is monthly income (use take-home pay if you are budgeting, since tax is already gone) and E is monthly essential expenses such as rent, food, utilities, transport and minimum debt payments. Income must be above zero and essentials cannot be negative or empty. If essentials exceed income, the tool does not stop: it shows a negative amount and a negative share, which is a monthly shortfall. The annual figure assumes the same month repeats twelve times. Amounts display in US dollars. This is a budgeting measure, not the formula used for government loan schemes.
Worked example
Someone takes home $4,200 a month and their essentials add up to $2,750. Monthly discretionary income is 4,200 − 2,750 = $1,450.00. Over twelve months that is 1,450 × 12 = $17,400.00. The share of income is 1,450 / 4,200 × 100 = 34.52%. If the essentials rose to $5,000, the result would turn to −$800.00 a month, or −19.05%, meaning a monthly gap that has to come from savings or credit.
Common mistakes
- Entering gross salary instead of take-home pay. Tax and social charges are not essentials the tool subtracts, so gross pay makes the leftover look larger than what you can spend.
- Counting wants as essentials, or the reverse. Streaming and dining out belong in discretionary spending, while minimum debt payments belong in essentials.
- Entering annual figures in the monthly fields. The tool multiplies by 12 itself, so a yearly income makes the annual figure twelve times too high.
- Ignoring irregular costs. Insurance, car repairs and annual bills must be averaged per month or the leftover is overstated.
- Overlooking a negative result. A figure with a minus sign is a monthly deficit, not a data error, and the tool still shows it.
About this calculator
Discretionary income is what's left of your income after covering essential expenses — housing, food, utilities, minimum debt payments, and similar necessities — the money you actually have freedom to save, invest, or spend on non-essentials. It's a more useful figure than gross or even net income for budgeting decisions, because it isolates the portion of your paycheck that's actually flexible.
This calculator takes your income and essential expenses and returns both the discretionary income left over each month and year, and its share of your total income. This figure supports general budgeting frameworks, where the share of income spent versus available for savings and discretionary spending is the key number being tracked. It is simply income minus the essential expenses you enter, so it is not the basis used by income-driven student loan repayment plans.
