Shopify Profit Calculator

Enter the sale price, product cost, payment fee, and fixed fee to find your net profit.

How it is calculated

The tool works out the per-unit result of one sale in three steps. Payment fee: fee = price × rate ÷ 100 + fixed fee. Profit: profit = price − product cost − fee. Margin: margin % = profit ÷ price × 100.

Rate is the percentage your payment processor takes and fixed fee is the flat amount added to each transaction; you enter both yourself, so the tool uses whatever rates apply to your plan or gateway (the form starts with 2.9% and 0.30). Amounts are in dollars. The price must be above zero and the other inputs cannot be negative. Only the payment fee is deducted: the monthly subscription, shipping, taxes, refunds, discounts and ad spend are not included, so subtract them separately.

Worked example

A product sells for $45.00 and costs $18.00 to buy. The payment fee is 2.9% plus $0.30.

Fee = 45 × 2.9 ÷ 100 + 0.30 = 1.305 + 0.30 = 1.605, shown as $1.61. Profit = 45 − 18 − 1.605 = 25.395, shown as $25.40. Margin = 25.395 ÷ 45 × 100 = 56.43%.

Common mistakes

  • Forgetting the fixed fee. On cheap items it matters: at a $12 price and $9 cost, the same fees take 0.65 and cut the margin to 19.60%.
  • Entering the payment rate as a decimal (0.029). The field is in percent, so type 2.9.
  • Treating the result as the profit of the whole business. It excludes subscription, shipping, returns, taxes and advertising.
  • Using the price before discounts when customers pay a discounted price; the fee is charged on what they actually pay.
  • Using the rate from the wrong plan or a third-party gateway. The fees differ, so enter the ones that match how this order was paid.

About this calculator

Shopify Payments charges every online sale a percentage-based processing rate plus a small fixed fee per transaction, and that rate steps down as a store moves up Shopify’s subscription tiers (Basic, Shopify, Advanced, Plus) — merchants who use a third-party payment gateway instead of Shopify Payments also pay an extra transaction fee on top. Because these percentage-plus-fixed charges apply to every single order regardless of size, they eat a disproportionate share of the margin on lower-priced items.

This calculator subtracts the product cost and the payment fee (percentage plus fixed) from the sale price to show the net profit and margin per unit. It is the same math a merchant would use to check whether a price point still clears a target margin once the platform’s cut of each transaction is accounted for — it does not include the monthly subscription fee, shipping, or ad spend, which need to be layered on separately.
