Shoe Size to Length Converter
Enter a US men's shoe size or a foot length to convert.
Result
How it is calculated
The tool uses one straight-line relationship for US men's sizes: length (mm) = size × 8.467 + 196, where size is the US men's number and length is in millimetres. Going from size to length it applies that formula directly. Going from length to size it reverses it: size = (length − 196) ÷ 8.467. It also shows the length in centimetres (mm ÷ 10) and inches (mm ÷ 25.4). Sizes are given to one decimal and are not rounded to the half sizes that shops sell, so round to the nearest half size yourself. The value must be above zero, but there is no check on a realistic range: a very short length gives a negative size. Women's, youth, EU or UK sizes are not converted.
Worked example
Your foot measures 265 mm and you want the US men's size. Subtract the base: 265 − 196 = 69. Divide by the step: 69 ÷ 8.467 = 8.149, shown as 8.1 (US men). The same length is 265 ÷ 10 = 26.5 cm and 265 ÷ 25.4 = 10.43 in. The nearest half size is 8, and since feet are rarely sold in tenths, a shop would usually suggest 8 or 8.5 depending on how the brand fits.
Common mistakes
- Choosing the wrong direction. A value of 10 as a length would be 10 mm, and as a size it means size 10; read the direction setting before you press convert.
- Entering the length in centimetres or inches. The length-to-size direction expects millimetres, so 26.5 would give a nonsense negative size and 265 is right.
- Using the result for women's or EU sizes. The scale is for US men's sizing, so a women's 8 is a different foot length from a men's 8.
- Measuring the shoe instead of the foot. The length is a foot length, and a shoe is cut longer to leave room for the toes.
- Trusting the result as a fit guarantee across brands. It is an approximation of the Brannock scale, and each maker's lasts differ.
About this calculator
US men’s shoe sizes increase in fixed steps of 1/3 inch (about 8.46 mm) of foot length per full size, with the scale historically anchored so that size 0 corresponds to a specific base length used by shoe last makers; this is the same relationship a Brannock device — the metal foot-measuring tool found in shoe stores — is built around when it maps a measured heel-to-toe length to a size.
Because online shoe shopping removes the chance to try before buying, converting between a size and a length in millimeters, centimeters or inches lets shoppers measure their actual foot and find the closest matching size across brands, or go the other way to see what foot length a given size assumes — useful for shoe retailers, resellers listing used shoes, and anyone comparing sizing across international scales.

A length from the length-to-size direction is a foot measurement, and a shoe needs to be longer than the foot, since toes want a little room at the end. Measure heel to longest toe in millimetres, with your weight on the foot, then compare the converted size with the brand's own chart instead of treating it as the final answer. Which brand's chart disagrees most with the figure you get here?
