Recipe Scaler Calculator
Scale any recipe up or down without the mental math.
Result
How it is calculated
The tool scales one ingredient at a time. You enter the servings the recipe was written for, the servings you want, and the amount of one ingredient in any unit. It first finds the scaling factor, factor = desired servings ÷ original servings, then new amount = amount × factor. The new amount and the factor are shown with two decimals, and the amount stays in whatever unit you typed, because the tool does not convert between grams, cups or spoons. Original and desired servings must be above zero and the amount cannot be negative; otherwise there is no result. Repeat the calculation for each ingredient. Scaling is a straight proportion, so it suits flour, vegetables or meat, but salt, spices, raising agents, pan size and cooking time often need judgement beyond the ratio.
Worked example
A stew is written for 6 servings and uses 250 g of beans. You are cooking for 9. Factor: 9 ÷ 6 = 1.50. New amount: 250 × 1.50 = 375.00 g. The tool prints the factor as 1.50x. Going the other way, 4 servings give a factor of 4 ÷ 6 = 0.67 and the beans become 166.67 g. Round the result to a practical measure, for example 375 g or 170 g.
Common mistakes
- Entering servings per person or per portion in the servings fields. They take the total servings of the original recipe and of the batch you want.
- Scaling spices, salt and raising agents by the full factor. Large batches often need less than the straight proportion, so taste and adjust.
- Assuming cooking time and pan size scale the same way. Doubling a cake does not double the baking time.
- Mixing units between runs, such as grams for one ingredient and cups for another, then reading them as one list. The unit stays as you typed it.
- Using a result such as 166.67 as it stands instead of rounding to the closest amount you can actually measure.
About this calculator
Recipe scaling works off a single scaling factor: divide your desired servings by the recipe’s original servings, then multiply every ingredient amount by that factor. A recipe written for 4 that needs to feed 10 gets multiplied by 2.5, so 2 cups of flour becomes 5 cups and 1 teaspoon of salt becomes 2.5 teaspoons.
The math is simple, but doing it by hand for a dozen ingredients — especially with mixed units like tablespoons, ounces and fractions — is where mistakes creep in. Home cooks lean on it when doubling a dinner for guests or halving a dessert for two, and caterers and meal-prep cooks use the same ratio to size a base recipe up to batch quantities. Note that scaling doesn’t always hold perfectly for leavening agents, spices and baking times, which often need adjusting by taste rather than strict proportion.
This calculator applies the scaling factor to a single ingredient amount at a time, so you can quickly convert an entire ingredient list without reaching for a calculator app.
