Set Rest-Pause Volume Calculator
Add up the total reps in your rest-pause set.
Result
How it is calculated
The tool treats a rest-pause set as one opening set followed by a number of identical mini-sets. burst reps = pauses × reps per pause and total reps = first set reps + burst reps. All three inputs are counts: reps in the opening set, how many short rests you take, and how many reps you get after each rest. It assumes every pause gives the same number of reps, so in real life, where each burst usually shrinks, enter an average or work it out burst by burst. It counts reps only: it does not account for load, rest length or how hard each rep was, and zero is accepted for any field. Negative numbers return no result.
Worked example
You do 10 reps to near failure, rest briefly, and then get 3 more reps after each of 3 pauses. Burst reps = 3 × 3 = 9. Total reps = 10 + 9 = 19. Result: 19 total reps, of which 9 came after the pauses. By comparison, the same opening set with only 2 pauses of 3 reps would give 16 total.
Common mistakes
- Counting the opening set as one of the pauses. The first set goes in its own field, and pauses are only the rests that follow it.
- Entering the same reps for every pause when the bursts really fall off (for example 4, 3, 2). The tool multiplies one number, so use the average, here 3, or the total of the bursts divided by the number of pauses.
- Entering the total reps of the whole set as the first set reps. The total is the result, not an input.
- Using the total as a measure of training volume across different weights. Total reps ignore the load, so a set at 100 kg and one at 60 kg are not comparable.
- Entering weights or seconds in the rep fields. All three fields are rep counts, except pauses, which counts the number of rests.
About this calculator
Rest-pause training takes a set close to failure, follows it with a short 10-to-20-second rest, then adds another short burst of reps — repeating that cycle until a target rep count is reached. It’s a technique for accumulating training volume at heavier loads than a straight set would allow, popularized in bodybuilding through high-intensity training approaches like those of Mike Mentzer and Dorian Yates.
Lifters short on gym time, or following intensity-focused programs, use it to pack more training volume into less time than traditional straight sets would require.
