Rain Chain Length Calculator
Enter the drop height and number of chains to size your rain chains.

How it is calculated
Each chain is cut to per chain = drop height × 1.05 and the order total is total = per chain × number of chains. The drop height is the vertical distance from the gutter outlet to the ground, a basin or a barrel, entered in feet; the 1.05 factor is a fixed 5% allowance. The results are in feet with one decimal, so the per-chain figure is rounded for display while the total is computed from the unrounded value. Both inputs must be above zero. The tool does not account for the chain's links or cups, for a connector at the top, or for the length that must run into a basin. Add those yourself if they apply.
Worked example
The gutter outlet is 9.5 ft above the ground and you plan to hang 4 chains. Each chain: 9.5 × 1.05 = 9.975 ft, shown as 10.0 ft. Total: 9.975 × 4 = 39.9 ft of chain. Note that the total uses the unrounded 9.975, so it is 39.9 ft, not 40.0 ft as 10.0 × 4 would suggest. If the chain must reach into a basin 1 ft deep, add that extra foot to the drop height before calculating.
Common mistakes
- Entering the drop in metres or inches. The field is in feet, so a 3 m drop is about 9.8 ft; typing 3 gives a chain that is far too short.
- Measuring from the roof edge instead of from the gutter outlet to the ground. Only the visible vertical run of the chain counts.
- Forgetting the end of the chain in a basin or barrel. The tool does not add that depth; include it in the drop height.
- Rounding up the per-chain length and multiplying yourself. The total comes from the exact 1.05 × drop, so small differences are normal.
About this calculator
A rain chain is a traditional Japanese alternative to an enclosed downspout — called kusari doi — that guides roof runoff visibly down a chain of linked cups or links instead of hiding it inside a pipe. Sizing one correctly just means matching its length to the vertical drop from the gutter outlet to the ground (or to a collection basin), with a little extra allowed for how the chain naturally hangs.
This calculator takes that drop height and the number of chains you're installing, then adds 5% slack to account for the fact that a hanging chain doesn't sit perfectly straight and needs a bit of extra length to reach its intended endpoint without stretching taut. It's a practical sizing tool for homeowners and landscapers planning gutter alternatives, rain gardens, or decorative water features around a home's roofline.

Rain chains are usually sold in set lengths and are easier to shorten than to lengthen, since you can remove links but not add them. Compare the per-chain figure with the nearest listed length and go up, not down. The drop is entered in feet, so convert a metric measurement first. What lengths do you find in the shops near you, and would a metric option make this easier?
