Rai to Square Meter Converter
Enter an area in rai to convert to square metres and hectares.
Result
How it is calculated
The tool applies two fixed factors: m² = rai × 1600 and hectares = rai × 0.16. The input is a single number of rai, which may be decimal; zero is accepted and negative values give no result. Both answers are rounded to two decimals. Because 1 rai equals 4 ngan, a plot written as rai and ngan must first be turned into decimal rai (each ngan is 0.25 rai) before you enter it. The factor is the same everywhere in Thailand, but other countries use different units with similar names or sizes, so do not apply it outside Thai land measures.
Worked example
A plot is listed as 2 rai 1 ngan. One ngan is a quarter of a rai, so the area is 2 + 0.25 = 2.25 rai. Square metres: 2.25 × 1600 = 3,600.00 m². Hectares: 2.25 × 0.16 = 0.36 ha. A 3,600 m² plot is the same as a 60 m × 60 m square.
Common mistakes
- Typing "2.1" for 2 rai 1 ngan; the ngan part is a quarter, so it must be 2.25.
- Ignoring the wah part of a deed measurement (1 rai = 400 square wah) and converting only the rai and ngan.
- Confusing the rai with the similarly sized units of other countries, or with the acre, which is about 4,047 m².
- Comparing a price per rai with a price per square metre without converting both to the same unit first.
About this calculator
This calculator converts the rai, Thailand's traditional land-area unit, into square metres and hectares using the fixed official relationship 1 rai = 400 square wah = 1,600 m² (a rai is also equal to 4 ngan, the next smaller Thai unit). These units are still the ones used on Thai land deeds (chanote) rather than the metric system alone.
Anyone buying property, leasing farmland, or comparing listings in Thailand needs this conversion, since prices and plot sizes are typically quoted in rai and ngan while the rest of the world thinks in square metres or hectares.

You can check the output in your head: one hectare is 6.25 rai, so dividing rai by 6.25 should match the hectare figure. Five rai gives 0.80 ha, which is 8,000 square metres. This is handy when a Thai listing quotes land in rai but a foreign buyer thinks in hectares or acres. Which other Thai land units, such as ngan or wah, would you like to see as separate converters?
