Rabbit Age in Human Years Calculator

How old is your rabbit, really?

How it is calculated

Enter the rabbit's age in years (use a decimal such as 0.5 for six months; there is no months box). The tool converts it in three straight-line stages: up to 1 year, human = 21 × age; between 1 and 2 years, human = 21 + 6 × (age − 1); after 2 years, human = 27 + 6 × (age − 2). So the first year counts as 21 human years, the second adds 6, and each later year adds 6 more. The result is shown with 1 decimal place. Ages of 0 or below, or above 18 years, and an empty box give no result. The same table is used for every rabbit; breed, size and health are not taken into account, so the answer is only a rough guide to life stage.

Worked example

A rabbit is 4 years old. It is past 2 years, so the third formula applies. First, 4 − 2 = 2 years beyond the second birthday. Then 2 × 6 = 12 human years added. Finally 27 + 12 = 39.0 human years. For comparison, the same rabbit at 1 year gives 21.0 and at 2 years gives 27.0, so the step from 2 to 4 years adds 12.

Common mistakes

  • Typing months into the years box. Entering 6 for a six-month-old rabbit gives 6 years, about 51 human years; enter 0.5 instead.
  • Multiplying by 7 as with the dog rule. Rabbits age much faster early on: 1 year is 21 human years, not 7.
  • Treating the result as exact. The tool uses one fixed table for all rabbits, so a giant breed and a dwarf breed get the same figure although their lifespans differ.
  • Expecting the pace to slow in old age. After 2 years the table adds a constant 6 human years per rabbit year, so 10 rabbit years gives 75.0, with no extra slowdown.
  • Entering an age above 18 years. The tool stops at 18, and a larger value returns nothing.

About this calculator

Unlike dogs, rabbits mature extremely fast in their first year — a six-month-old rabbit is already sexually mature, and this calculator puts it at about 10.5 human years — and then their aging rate slows and levels off through adulthood, with real-world lifespan depending on breed size (dwarf and small breeds tend to live longer, 8–12 years, than giant breeds, which often live only 5–6 years). This conversion isn't governed by a single fixed multiplier like the old "one rabbit year equals seven human years" myth for dogs; it follows a curve that's steep early and flatter later, similar to how veterinarians model aging in most companion animals. Here the first year counts as 21 human years, the second year brings it to 27, and every year after that adds 6.

Rabbit owners and exotic-pet veterinarians use age-in-human-years estimates to judge when a rabbit should transition to a senior diet, when to start watching for age-related conditions like arthritis or dental disease, and to set realistic expectations about energy level and behavior for a given life stage — a "middle-aged" rabbit at four years old behaves very differently from a six-month-old kit.

This calculator converts your rabbit's age in years (up to 18) into its approximate human-year equivalent, giving you a quick, intuitive sense of your rabbit's life stage. It uses the same table for every breed, and for an age in months you divide by 12 (for example, 6 months is 0.5 years).
