Points to Pixels Converter
Enter a size in points to convert to pixels.
Result
How it is calculated
The conversion is one multiplication: px = pt × 96 / 72, which is pt × 1.3333. A typographic point is 1/72 of an inch, and a CSS pixel is defined as 1/96 of an inch, so one point is 96/72 pixels. The result is rounded to two decimals, so 7 pt shows as 9.33 px although the exact value is 9.3333… Zero and negative numbers are not rejected: 0 gives 0.00 px and -6 gives -8.00 px, even though a negative size is meaningless for type. The tool works with CSS pixels, not device pixels. A high-density phone screen draws several device pixels for each CSS pixel, but the conversion for CSS stays the same.
Worked example
A document uses 10.5 pt body text and you need the CSS size. Multiply by 96: 10.5 × 96 = 1008. Divide by 72: 1008 / 72 = 14. The result is 14.00 px. The same method gives 12 pt = 16.00 px, the common default size of browser text, and 9 pt = 12.00 px. Because the ratio is 4/3, any point size that is a multiple of 3 converts to a whole number of pixels.
Common mistakes
- Dividing instead of multiplying. Pixels are larger numbers than points on screen (12 pt is 16 px), so a result smaller than the input means the formula was inverted.
- Expecting a physical size on every screen. The CSS pixel is a reference unit at 96 per inch, so 14 px will not measure exactly 10.5 pt with a ruler on a phone or a scaled monitor.
- Mixing up pt with pc or with em. A pica is 12 points and an em depends on the parent font size, so neither follows the 4/3 ratio used here.
- Rounding too early. A value like 9.33 px is already rounded; if you convert it back you will get 7.00 pt, but chains of rounded values drift, so keep the original point value.
- Entering a negative size. The tool accepts it and returns a negative pixel value, which CSS does not allow for font-size.

About this calculator
A point (pt) is a print-typography unit fixed at 1/72 of an inch, while the CSS pixel is defined by the W3C as a reference unit anchored to 96 pixels per inch regardless of a screen's actual density. That ratio gives the conversion 1 pt = 96/72 px = 1.3333 px, which is why a 12pt font in a print layout maps to 16px on the web.
Web and UI developers, and designers moving type specs out of InDesign, Illustrator or Photoshop (which all work in points) into CSS, use this conversion constantly to keep typography visually consistent between a print mockup and a live page.

Be careful when a spec comes out of a design file. Adobe tools commonly treat one pixel as one point at 72 ppi, so a label reading 12 px in such a file may really be 12 pt, which is 16 CSS pixels in the browser. Check the document unit before converting. A quick sanity check is that the result should always be one third larger than the input. Which design tool do your type specs usually come from?
