Pressure Calculator
Find the pressure a force exerts over an area.
Result
How it is calculated
Pressure is force spread over the area it acts on: P = F / A. Enter the force F in newtons and the area A in square metres, and the result comes out in pascals (1 Pa = 1 N/m²). The same value is also shown in kilopascals, kPa = P / 1000, with four decimals. The area must be above zero; the force may be zero or negative, which gives a zero or negative pressure. The tool does not convert units, so an area in cm² or a force in kgf has to be converted first.
Worked example
A force of 600 N presses on an area of 0.0125 m² (for example 10 cm × 12.5 cm). Pressure = 600 / 0.0125 = 48,000 Pa. In kilopascals that is 48,000 / 1000 = 48. The tool shows 48,000.00 Pa, which is 48.0000 kPa. Halving the area would double the pressure to 96,000 Pa.
Common mistakes
- Entering area in cm² or mm². Convert to m² first: 1 cm² is 0.0001 m².
- Entering a mass in kg as the force. Multiply by about 9.81 to get newtons.
- Using the total area of an object when the force acts only on a small contact patch, such as a heel or a needle point.
- Confusing pascals with kilopascals or bar. 100 kPa is 1 bar.
- Putting the area in the force field and the force in the area field, which gives the reciprocal.
About this calculator
Pressure is defined as force applied perpendicular to a surface divided by the area over which it's distributed: P = F / A, typically expressed in pascals (Pa = N/m²) or psi (lb/in²) in imperial units. For the same applied force, a smaller contact area produces much higher pressure — which is why a sharp knife cuts easily (tiny contact area concentrates force) while snowshoes let you walk on snow without sinking (large area spreads force thin).
Physics students use this formula as one of the earliest applications of Newton's laws to real surfaces, while engineers use it constantly: mechanical engineers size hydraulic and pneumatic components, civil engineers check foundation bearing pressure against soil capacity, and product designers calculate contact pressure to avoid material deformation or failure.

The result comes only in Pa and kPa, so for tyre or hydraulic figures in psi, divide the pascal value by 6,894.76. As a sanity anchor, normal atmospheric pressure is about 101,325 Pa, so a result near that means the load pushes about as hard as the air around us. Gauge readings usually exclude the atmosphere, so keep that in mind. What are you measuring, a contact patch, a piston or a foundation?
