Pregnancy Folate Needs Calculator
Find out how much folic acid to add to reach your daily folate target in pregnancy.

How it is calculated
The tool picks a fixed daily target from the risk level you select, then subtracts what you already get from food: supplement = target − dietary folate, never below zero. The target is 600 mcg per day for the standard level and 4,000 mcg per day for the high-risk level; all values are in micrograms (mcg) per day. Dietary folate can be 0 to 5,000, and anything outside that range returns no result. If your diet already meets or exceeds the target, the supplement shows 0 mcg. The tool does not convert between food folate and folic acid; it simply compares the numbers you enter. These are the targets this tool applies and guidelines differ between countries. High-risk dosing is set by a clinician, so use this only as a rough check.
Worked example
Standard risk level, with about 250 mcg of folate per day from food. Daily target = 600 mcg. Supplement = 600 − 250 = 350 mcg. Result: 350 mcg of folic acid to add per day, against a daily target of 600 mcg. With the high-risk level and the same diet, the target becomes 4,000 mcg and the gap 3,750 mcg.
Common mistakes
- Entering a prenatal vitamin's folic acid in the dietary field. That field is for food only. Subtract the vitamin's dose from the result afterwards.
- Choosing the high-risk level without a clinician's advice. It raises the target to 4,000 mcg, which is a prescribed amount, not a general goal.
- Entering milligrams (0.4) instead of micrograms (400). Both fields use mcg per day.
- Guessing dietary folate from a single day. Intake varies a lot, so use an average of several days or a food-diary figure.
- Reading a 0 mcg result as permission to stop supplements. Zero only means the entered diet reaches the target on paper, and absorption varies.

About this calculator
Folate requirements rise substantially in pregnancy because folate is essential for the neural tube closure that happens in the first weeks of gestation, and the recommended daily target depends on risk level — a standard-risk pregnancy typically targets around 600 mcg DFE (dietary folate equivalent) per day, while a higher-risk pregnancy (such as a prior neural tube defect or certain medications) calls for a substantially higher supplemental folic acid dose under clinical guidance. The calculation subtracts your estimated dietary folate intake from the target to find the supplemental gap.
Obstetric providers and pregnant patients use this kind of estimate when reviewing a prenatal vitamin's folic acid content against dietary intake, since prenatal vitamins vary in dosage and diet alone rarely reaches pregnancy-level folate targets, particularly in early pregnancy before most people even know they're pregnant, which is why folic acid supplementation is typically recommended starting before conception.
